I'm always surprised when murderers turn themselves in, but it seems to happen an awful lot. I think what happens is that someone they know (a friend or family member) knows that they committed the crime (by seeing a video on TV, for instance) and tells them that they are going to turn them in if they don't surrender. They surrender at this point rather than going on the lam and getting hunted down by police. However, I'm sure that most of these guys regret not running away when they had the chance once they're sentenced to life in prison or given the death penalty.

Well unlike hollywood where killers are all geniuses most of these guys are probably dumb as [censored] and can't even begin to fathom what they would do to survive as fugitives

I spent a few hours in jail chit chatting with a guy who turned himself in for murder. Apparently, he caught his GF w/ another guy and killed her. Was on the lamb for about a week. Basically, everyone knew he did it and didn't feel like running anymore.

Edit: I also suspected he had limited funds and support to keep hiding or run far away.

That's the problem. Had he tried to escape on a horse or in a car, he might have had a chance. A man riding a lamb coudln't possibly outrun police.

The guy killed a cheating girlfriend, it's not like he was Hannibal Lecter or something.

I once turned myself in on what I strongly suspected would be a serious assault charge. It's easy to fantasize about going on the lam in a situation like this but when you actually find yourself having to make that decision, you realize it's not so simple. You lose your family and all your friends. How do you get money? A job? An apartment? How do you move from country to country? Even if you can find solutions to all these problems, you can't rest easy for the rest of your life, and you can't ever be fully honest with another person. It's gonna get real lonely real fast.

I understand that there's a big difference between assault and murder charges. But these are kids, they probably expect that somehow or other things will work out & they'll get off easy in the end.

a guy at my school who killed his girlfriend (and hid her in a suitcase in her backyard) turned himself in because his friend told him the cops were on him. I think in these situations it's the only play.
