Default 3/6 limit hold \'em - help!

i bought "small stakes hold 'em" by sklansky, but by the 20th page i figured this book will take me a month to give it a once through, and much longer than that to fully understand it. and i want to play poker now

i plan on buying into the local 3/6 limit hold 'em game at the hustler casino in los angeles, and i was wondering if you pro's can give a newbie some generic advice?

what hands to play preflop, how to play them postflop depending on the circumstances, etc.

ah i started to respond but this would take forever.

try 'winning low limit holdem' by lee jones as another good starting book for beginning beginners.

super basic preflop: limp small pairs, raise big pairs and ak, and get in there cheaply with any two cards higher than ten, and sometimes suited connectors like 89, if there are lots of other limpers already in there (like if you have qt and it's raised and reraised to you, obviously fold). first in, raise pairs 88 and higher, and nonpairs kq and higher and aj and higher in early-ish position. if you're in late position and it's folded around to you (unlikely) raise any of those hands i listed earlier.

on the flop, look to have overpairs, top pair good kicker, two pairs+, or an openended straight draw or four-flush draw to continue. or if you raised something preflop and only one or two people came along, and you missed the flop, say with ak, go ahead and bet anyway they might fold.

if you just stay focused and fold crap preflop, and don't give into the temptation to play some random hand, you'll already have an advantage on everyone else

i think 'getting started in holdem' or something like that, also by sklansky, might be better for you as a beginner. 'sshe' is kind of the intermediate book.

#1 is starting hand selection. You should see 20-25% of flops.

Small Stakes Holdem does take a little while to digest, but once you understand it thouroughly, you will crush this game. In the mean time, I recommend Getting Started in Holdem by Ed Miller. It is pretty basic, but will put you on the right path for sure.

Biggest leak in a beginning beginner's game: COLD CALLING RAISES BECAUSE YOU DECIDED TO PLAY BEFORE THE RAISE WAS IN. Virtually all hands that you can play against a raise (excepting if you're all the way around the back and there are lots of people already playing along) are those you would reraise with. A10 offsuit looks good before someone raises, and plays like cement boots afterward. Plug this hole and you won't lose as much while you learn everything else.

i recommend you not think it turns of absolutes like this. sometimes AT sucks against a raise. sometimes its a very good hand. other times its mediocre but pot odds dictate you play it.

thus, in order of profitability (lowest to highest)

Always playing AT <<< sometimes playing AT < religiously throwing it away to PF raises
