This is a tought spot you could just play it for set value and fold the flop, I know that is weak but I have done it before.

I really do not mind how you played it, you get a bluff out of overs on the flop and then try to take it down on the turn. I might consider firing out a small blocking bet on the river, the check seems to beg for a large bet by villian.

Lead flop. Fold to big raise.
c/c turn.
b/f river if he bet on turn. Otherwise, c/c.

Thats what I do, at least.

I like leading the flop here as well. Aside from that, whether or not I call this river is entirely read dependent.

I usually reraise this pf. Since you didn't, I'd check-call the flop and check-fold the turn.

What are the merits of "check-call flop, lead turn" when OOP with a good-but-not-monster hand? Maybe it's a small sample size, but I've tried this line in the past month with absolutely no success (i.e., the in-position Villains don't fold on the turn).

In the hand above, I agree that leading the flop is best. As played, a check-raise to, say, $24ish wouldn't be horrible either.

Lead flop or check turn. Lead flop because you are likely to have the best hand, but its vulnerable and you can get into tricky spots OOP on later streets. As played, I don't like the turn bet and its size. You are kind of pot-committing yourself and you pretty much have to call since it's hard to tell on this board whether you are ahead. It's also a crappy bet for information since it costs so much and bloats the pot for the river. So I'd check turn and see what he does. MIght fold depending on bet sizing and feel, and sometimes call.
