Imagine the big game in Bobby's room is like playing .1/.2 or less. I would love to see the list for that game if Bill ever sat down.

It's 3/6 Limit. This is one of those stories that people put in their books or Cardplayer articles when they can't think of anything else, and since I read all that crap I've heard it 4.6 million times.

Hes too bad at poker and too smart with money to play 300/600. Plus to him, 3/6 is the same as 300/600, so he just plays where its commensurate to his skill and where people are trying to win and he can have fun.

3/6 FL was what I heard. Also in a regular game in the main cardroom. A player asked him why he was playing with them. Gates said he preferred the company of the 3/6 players over the company of the bigger limit players.

I had heard the story of Bill Gates playing $3-$6 limit and I always admired that. Bill could play the big game x10 and it wouldn’t matter, so as it is poker is poker to Bill regardless of limit or lack there of.

For the love of the game, a little fun and to mental challenge your self for a few hours.

Me. I've seen more tools playing 3-6 than any of the higher games.

The best is when they act like the game is a televised final table.

lol, agreed.

It'd be pretty cool to sit down and play with someone who, if they wanted, COULD offer you enough money where you'd say "sure, you can own me, I'll be your servant."

Figure the buy in at the big game is about what, 100k ish? Didn't he spend about 400 million on his last house 5 years ago or so? Or was that 4.4 billion?

When I was last in Vegas, I played some at Casears and was told that Bill Gates had just left the poker room. The staff said he was playing $4/$8 Limit Hold Em.
The other Microsoft guy, Richard Brodie, stayed in the card room longer and was playing No Limit Hold Em with some friends (I think it was 1-3 NL) while I was there.
Not that any of that is new or interesting, but, thought I'd share.

Let's see. Say you have about $100,000 that you could fool around with playing poker and it wouldn't really change your life if you lost. Bill Gates has what, ~$100 billion net worth? So let's say he has $10 billion that he could play around with and it would not really affect his life if he lost it.

Furthermore, the biggest limit game you might like to play is, say, 30/60. If Bill Gates played a similar limit, relatively speaking to your differing net worths, he would play (if I have my zeroes right) 3,000,000/6,000,000 limit hold'em.

Or looked at another way. If he really does play 3/6 limit hold'em, it would be like you playing the mircolimits of 3 ten thousandth of a cent/6 ten thousandth of a cent!

In other words, Bill Gates at the 3/6 is playing play money.

We used to have a dealers choice game a couple of nights a week in Wigglesworth Hall during our Freshmen year at Harvard. Jim Cramer and Steve Ballmer also used to play. Bill was pretty good; very good at Bridge.

I'm sure he could crush most games if he committed to it and put his mind on it, but I think he's pretty busy as it is.

Imagine how [censored] a person must feel stacking off all their chips to him knowing that the money is so far beyound miniscule to him that there is no real comparison. He should atleast play like 15/30 or something to where the players should have legit bankrolls.

The games with Andy Beal got up to $100,000/$200,000 limit, for which each player had a 10 million stack.

By contrast the regular game in Bobby's Room is $2,000/$4,000, sometimes $4,000/$8,000.

There is an assumption that just because Bill Gates has an enormous amount of money, he should be playing the bigger games. There is no equation on what limits you should play relative to your net worth. It's recreation and fun for him - I applaud him for that.

Lol drunken $100,000/$200,000 PLO8 with autopot on every street would still be playmoney to bill gates. So 3-6 = 300-600 to him, since its nothing anyways.

i have heard the following story - never knew if it was true (although the part about gates playing very small stakes is true)

gates is playing 4/8...players in the big game find out and send him a note that says "Why don't you come play a game that is a little more interesting? (they were playing 4000/8000)" gates sends back a note that says "Well, if you guys want to play 4 million/8 million, that might make it a little more interesting"...

He enjoys the game and general game theory, the money is absolutely pointless. There are chronicles of him in Vegas for conventions playing $5.00 a hand Blackjack in the high limit salon with a private dealer and tipping her $5K for 90 minutes work.

Thas is the way to do things, I would tip $100 bills for anything if I were rich, I would make it a point.

Why get a 400 dollar haircut (john edwards) when you can get a $7 haircut and tip the barber cutting your hair 400?? that would have been such good PR.

The Bill Gates plays 3/6 limit story has been around. My guess is he is at least half decent and has enough of a competitive spirit to at least try hard.

IMO it's a good move by him; he gets to have some fun and rumors of having a nitty approach to gambling might be good (or at least not bad) for Microsoft's stock price.

I heard that Gates played 3 6 limit at the Mirage.

The players often tip fifty cents by throwing the dealer a dollar and saying, "Half back." The dealer throws them a half dollar. When Gates won a pot, he did that and everyone laughed.

He is supposed to be a very good bridge player and often plays with Warren Buffet as a partner.

In the "Poker Face of Wall Street" by Aaron Brown (a 2+2 poster by the way) Bill is mentioned twice.

One is on page 13, where is he is listed as one of the billionaires who got their first stake money from poker.

The second is on page 178, where Bill was *running* the game which is described as tight and unfriendly, and some players losing more than they could afford. Perhaps this this experience influences him to play in friendly games where no one is going to get hurt?
