I'm 20, and would like to be able to dunk at least once before I die.. I can't quite hang on the rim but an inch would do the trick.. I think 6-7" would be enough to dunk(maybe I'm off)
I use one of these at the gym:

and was wondering if I am supposed to use light weight and explode or heavy and go slow.. I also squat, and should probably start jumping rope..

any other tips

Box jumps, box jumps, box jumps.

Things like quarter squats and jump squats also work well. Concentrate on really exlpoding when you do these.

Excellent advice. Isometric squats, plyometric work, and losing bodyfat will help.

when doing squats/leg press...look to bring the way down slowly and then explode it upward

plyometrics, jump rope, box jumps.

When I played college ball I used jumpsoles jumping shoes and they added a few inches on my vertical(but it was a pretty grueling workout).

Obviously losing any excess body fat will help as well.
