View Full Version : Do I need to rent a car while in Vegas for the WSOP?

I feel kinda dumb asking this but I've never been to vegas before.

Thanks

Latest thinking is the following:

1. It is really [censored] hot in Vegas during the summer (it's been upwards of 109 degrees this week).
2. Walking is a bitch when it is 109 degrees.
3. Cabs have gotten increasingly expensive in Vegas.
4. If you're 25 or over, you can probably get a good enough deal on a rental car to make it cheap enough.

Conclusion: Unless you have hiked through desert before, I'd go with the rental car.

A good case of sunburn and dehydration could be good for my poker game.

Please post any awesome car rental deals that anyone discovers in this thread.

Would a convertible be stupid out there? Way too hot for the top down?

Dollar is the cheapest. After all the taxes you can get a car for $150 per week. That's the best I have found and I am pretty sure that is the best I am going to find.

You can get a rental for the week for $150 or less. When you add up the cab fare to and from the airport and trips to and from other casinos (the Rio is not within walking distance from anything) it will cost you nothing to rent a car. Add to that cab lines can sometimes be a joke and the freedom of having your own car and it is a no-brainer.

Everyone warns you about how hot it is here in the summer, but I've been here 3 weeks and it's not nearly as bad as everyone says. I'm from Illinois, where the summers are a little cooler, but much more humid. The lack of humidity makes all the difference.

If you're staying close, I'd say hoof it, or get a cab for the times you don't want to. Also, with a rental car you have to deal with parking, which can be annoying, and traffic, which is [censored] in vegas.

I have another tip for you too....before you get to Vegas, sign up for the rental agencies "frequent renter program". (Even if you don't frequently rent.) That way, when you arrive at McCarran Airport, you don't wait in the rental agencies long line. you just hop their shuttle to the lot where they keep their cars and they tell you to pick any car in row D, they keys are in it, and you drive off. It is by far the fastest way to get out of the airport and into the action! /images/graemlins/cool.gif

I have never had issues with rental lines at Vegas airport, but it couldn't hurt to sign up, I guess.

My tip is to look on Orbitz.com. They give rates for many agencies by car size. Very easy to compare.

I just got a mid-size car (Dodge Status) from Thrify for $254 for the period 7/26 thru 8/5. Not a bad deal, especially considering i'm splitting the cost with yeknaH!

If your staying at or near a Harrar's property they run a shuttle between the strip hotels and the Rio every 1/2 hour. This might be a bit risky depending on how many other people plan to use the shuttles during the WSOP. It worked well for a trip to Vegas in May.

Free parking and free valey (plus tip) at all of the casinos. Getting around from casino to casino isn't to bad. Use the side streets and freeway as much as possible.

I'm certainly not a Vegas expert but I've visited 10 times without renting a car. I never had a problem getting around (walking, cab or shuttle.) However, one time we met a friend who lived there and having access to her car sure was nice.

The rental car I can handle. It's the parking that has me stumped. Since I haven't gotten around to researching it myself --

What are the typical charges for parking at the casinos? Overnight at one of the strip hotels as well as at the Rio.

Between the cost of the rental car, parking, and tipping the valet, are you coming close to the cost of taking cabs?

It has been the nicest summer in Illinois that I can ever remember. Hopefully, the weather will hang on until I also get to Vegas.

But, in general, GoblinMason is exactly right. If you are from California or some other weather spoiled area, you will complain like crazy about the heat. If you are from the Midwest or any place with hot and humid summers, you will not mind it so much.

Also, whether to rent a car depends alot on where you are staying, for how long, and what you will be doing.

Cannot advise without specifics.

I'm from Hotlanta (Atlanta), and the summers here can be brutal. And while you don't sweat in Vegas like you do here, it is still very uncomforable in 115 degree heat.

I had a car last year, and my brother and I went everywhere around the city. This year, we may take a trip out to the Hoover DAM. We have the option with the car to go anywhere anytime.

While parking in some of the casinos does require a long walk, it's mostly a shaded walk, and often air conditioned.

I was at the entire WSOP last year and parking was quite easy. Plenty of it, and it was always free except for downtown.

Traffic was fine aside from the Strip, but then again, you're just driving in a straight line then.

After you have been to vegas 7 or 8 time you learn the back roads really fast. Here is a tip, take Paradise Rd. instead of Las Vegas Blvd.

WAYY too hot for the top down. I was in LV last year in late July. 115+ every day. While that is rare, 105+ isn't. Not only that, you'd probably get sunburned because it's sunny all the time. Plus, since you'd be stuck in traffic all the time if you take the strip, you won't even have any wind in your hair.

MicroBob

Parking is free.

Tip the valet if you go that route.

Renting was MUCH easier than trying to cab it or shuttle or walk (as I did on my first trip).

Line for cab or shuttle can get long sometimes.

Driving can be a pain sometimes too with traffic and sometimes parking further away than you would like. But I still liked having my own car over waiting in various shuttle lines.

Note that sometimes you don't have to wait in line to catch a shuttle or cab at all so it really isn't THAT inconvenient.

I just vastly preferred having a car and almost definitely will do so again if/when I get to LV again.

you are not going this year? is this because you have not tried sats, don't want to go, or are still doing sats?

MicroBob
06-24-2006, 01:47 AM
It is because I suck at poker and have blown an excessive amount of dough in sats in my feeble attempts to qualify.

Finished 2nd in one fo the Bodog guarantees and other kinda-semi close-calls. But nothing too spectacular.

I might have a couple more sats left in me. But i need to focus on paying the bills first and my bankroll is a bit thinner after my WSOP-qualifying exploits.

I would like to go but won't exactly be heart-broken if I don't go.
There are several other tournaments I would probably prefer to go to as much as or possibly even more than the WSOP.

these include the PCA, Aruba, PPM and many of the EPT events.

what site did you qualify on granny? I know that you're going but don't remember specifically seeing how or when you qualified for it.

How far is from MC to Rio ? (in km not miles please !!) How much (~) will I pay for a cab ??

MicroBob
06-24-2006, 01:54 PM
cab-ride from MC to Rio will be $10-$12 I think. Plus, you are pretty much obligated to tip a couple bucks too (which I think is different from Europe).

I don't know how far in miles or km but there is no way you would want to walk this. It would probably take you close to an hour to get from MC to the Rio.

Also note that all the buildings are so big there that you will be able to SEE the Rio and you will think, "Man, that microbob must walk really slow. Because it doesn't look that far away."
It's an optical illusion. I walk faster than most people. It really will take you a significant time to make that walk.

I was not used to the temps in LV but it really wasn't so bad because the humidity is super-low in the desert.

Last year, the Hi temp was LITERALLY 116 degrees on many of the days.
The temp at midnight was 102.

In the daytime that sun is relentless.
And I didn't know it was even possible for human-beings to exist at 116. It was all new and weird to me.
But it's not as bad as you think. You just have to be super-careful if you're out by the pool or something because you will get badly burnt REALLY easily.

But for walking around outside and stuff I felt like it was kind of similar to a typical hot day in Memphis when it's 96 degrees with 90% humidity.

sorry, forgot to answer this.

i spent $1500 trying to qualify at bodog in the $250's. came third once, and lost a massive chip lead at final table once in a 3 hand stretch of beats. decided to stop there.

so, i pre-registered for the $1500 LHE event on the 24th. this got me a $30 per night discount on my room rate at rio. i LOVE lhe, and there will likely be a smaller field than all the NLHE events, thus a better shot at cashing (or at least making it to the 3rd break! /images/graemlins/blush.gif /images/graemlins/blush.gif)

then, i will try ONE $1050 for the ME and if i lose, i will buy in direct.
THANK YOU TAYLOR HICKS!! woo

if i make it far in the ME, i will sell my rotund body to the highest bidder that can provide a 3XXXL shirt, and 2 packs of smokes a day.

i don't follow American Idol so wasn't reading any of those AI threads you guys were getting into.
I had no idea you made out THAT freaking well on that.
Wow.

Also - thanks for the kind words. Me as well, would be fun. There's still a shot I'll get there but my tourney game seems to be in a huge slump lately.

Regarding the $1050 single-table sat's.
Recommend you try a couple of the smaller buy-in ones just to get comfrotable with them kind of as a warm-up.

the $1050 has a significantly longer structure though so perhaps playing the lower buy-in "turbos" might be a bad thing.

Kathy Liebert and Scott Fischman seemed to be practically living in those $1050's for a few days.

i want a one table shot at a full lamer for the ME. maybe i will chop if i get to 2. other than that, buying in direct is a no-brainer for me this year. i really did
do very well on AI this year, so this whole trip, plus expenses, is a freeroll.

maybe stop the sats, and just come and take your shot in the SnG's there for the cheaper events. much better chance of cashing than in an event with 8,000 people. if you never play an event, it is still the BEST (loosest) cash games of the year.

hope you come.

The *AVERAGE* high temperature in Vegas in late July is 104 degrees F (40 Celsius).

The Weather forecast (http://www.weather.com/outlook/recreation/boatandbeach/tenday/89101?from=36hr_topnav_boat) for the next 10 days ranges from 36 to 43 Celsius. For the month of June, the lowest high was 32. The highest was yesterday at 43.

Cliff Notes: It's hot.

I drink alot, plus there's some stress involved in driving from casino to casino if you're not familiar with the area. I'd advise cabbing it. But the cab lines were somewhat long at the Rio during the series.
