View Full Version : The *Official* OMG I Actually Qualified for the WSOP Thread

Let the excitement venting begin...

I, for one, am beyond super excited. Enough to the point that everytime I am having an upsetting/stressful moment at work, I just imagine myself slowrolling Phil Hellmuth on Day 1B, and winking to the cameras at the featured table... and all is solved. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Vegas... WSOP... summer... drinking... going to be a blast!

For the record, I didn't start this thread just to toot my horn (that was part of it, maybe /images/graemlins/grin.gif) I really wanted to hear from the others in the MTT forum who are either in the process of qualifying or have already done so, and all share in the awesomeness.

In any case, here’s my qualifying story (tl;dr):

So I’m putting together IKEA furniture with my girlfriend on Sunday (yes, living with a girl really does domesticate you), when all of a sudden she gets called into the office. So I figure what better to do in the next 3 hours than to fire up a quick MTT. Now, normally I play on Party (and all my previous WSOP qualifying attempts have been through Party’s Step Challenge or their nightly $215), but for some reason I decided to check out Stars. Low and behold, starting in 3 minutes was the $33+R WSOP Main Event Qualifier. Plus, there was a chance I could run well and only spend like $33 or $63, which was really cool.

So I decide that in order to win this thing, I will need to amass an enormous stack coming out of the rebuy period. Unfortunately, I took this notion a bit too far and decided to open push almost every rotation, looking to get lucky and double up, and then basically tighten my game up once I established myself as a maniac. Well… luck wasn’t exactly on my side, and after 8 buy-ins ($243) I found myself with the same starting stack of 1,500 with only 8 minutes to go in the rebuy period. People at the table were even making fun of me. “You suck, man.” “Why don’t you just save your money and buy into the next one.” And this comment I’ll never forget. When I asked the table “Does anyone know if the first prize includes $1K of spending cash,” someone responded, “Don’t worry. There’s no way you’re winning it.” Well my luck changed when I finally started getting cards, and I began stacking people left and right. 8 minutes later, I found myself with a stack of 45,000 and sole position of the chip lead. /images/graemlins/grin.gif I quickly checked the payout structure, and much to my dismay, only 1st place was going to receive the $12K prize package with 2nd -6th getting a measly $650.

I stayed chipleader for a while, using my image to stack some more people. I probably never really left the Top 8 in chipcount throughout the entire tourney. Headed into the final table, I was 2nd in chips out of the remaining 9 players, but lost a tough hand immediately, knocking me down to 7th place. I kind of clawed my way around to hold on until there were only 5 players, but I didn’t exactly have a healthy stack. There was a maniac to my right who was constantly raising absurd amounts, and I was waiting for a good resteal opportunity. Finally, when he open-raised to 5BBs on the button, I decided to push with my 57o to a total of 20BBs. The maniac insta-called with K4o /images/graemlins/confused.gif. The flop came no help to either one of us, and I was headed to e-rail. Before I had a chance to vomit though, a 5 peeled on the turn and I was back in it.

Later, when we were down to 4 players, another key hand came up. On my BB with 24BBs, the maniac SB open-raised to 3.5BBs and I pushed with 77. BB insta-called again with ATs. We were off to the races. My girlfriend (who had returned home from the office and was upset that we couldn’t continue with the furniture-building now) was in the room and watched me started talking to my screen: “Come on, baby. Hold up one time. Let me win the race.” The flop was dealt… A/images/graemlins/heart.gifA/images/graemlins/diamond.gif2/images/graemlins/spade.gif. I felt queasy. I already started to console myself: “Well, Rob… you got close. There’s nothing you can—“ 7/images/graemlins/heart.gif. Holy [censored]! The 7/images/graemlins/heart.gif actually fell on the turn. It was unreal.

Long story not as long, I regained the chiplead and got heads up with the maniac. Here was the final hand.

Maniac had just won a race and I still had a slight chiplead, but it was anyone’s game. I am dealt T/images/graemlins/heart.gif8/images/graemlins/club.gif in the BB with about 40BBs. Maniac min-raises his SB with about 32BBs (nothing unusual) and I call. Flop comes 2/images/graemlins/heart.gif7/images/graemlins/club.gif8/images/graemlins/spade.gif. I check, and maniac bets 3BBs. I raise to 9BBs. Maniac instantly moves in for the rest of his stack (23BBs more to call). Calling and losing would only leave me with 8BBs and essentially would be conceding victory. I decided after probably too little thought that I was still ahead of a good amount of his range, and called. Needless to say, I was delighted when my T/images/graemlins/heart.gif8/images/graemlins/club.gif was ahead of his 9/images/graemlins/heart.gif8/images/graemlins/diamond.gif. My hand held up, and I won the package!

OK… now someone else post in here so we can kick off the pre-WSOP celebrations.

i won in the nightly super on party (the 215 or whatever it is) back in march. i dont' really remember much about it. i was top in chips basically the whole tournament, went into the FT 3rd or so in chips i think. top 3 got a seat, i managed to just steal my way to a seat basically. i didn't really get in any huge showdowns from what i remember...actually i think i had QQ vs JJ to bust the player in 4th...that was pretty hot...

see u in vegas

OMG! I made it! Thanks to all the great MTT posters and mods who helped me get there with their knowledge. I haven't made many substantiative posts, but I've read and learned a lot. Thank you, thank you, thank you. (And keep posting deepstack advice, i gotta get a lot better)

Won in my 3rd try of a PS $160 double shootout back when i was running good a month ago (got 2nd in my 1st). With about 5 people left at the FT i was chipleader. Then one player got hot and took out 3 other players as they tried to bluff him one by one and he kept having top pair, which always meant he was playing it for all his chips. I think we got heads up at the 100/200 level. Took the chiplead when my TT hit a set to beat his A7s on an AT2 flop. Then I raised to 600 pf with ATo and he called. Flop is T9x. I bet pot and he calls. Turn is a blank. I push, he calls and shows QT. No Q on the river and I'm in.

Then I won another "seat" on Sunday in the $650 on Stars. I was kind of shocked at the poor play at the end of the satellite for such a large buy-in with so much at stake, people still wouldn't fold their way in if they were dealt a hand.

What to do with all these W$? Considering buying-in to the smaller WSOP events if i can get my posse there to hang out with during that time. I imagine the MTT forum will have a lot of posters in. Any of you guys hanging out together?

Regardless, can't wait, no better feeling than being being lucky, drunk and rich in vegas.

As an aside, does anyone have any idea what the schedule is like for the prelims? When does play start/end each day? Around what time does the final table usually finish?

Anyways, I'll be in Vegas from June 26th-July 3rd and then July 18th until I'm out of the ME.

As much as you can say without getting in trouble with "The Man,"... what is the extent of this endorsement deal? Does Pokerstars basically give you a freeroll into any $10K event that you feel like playing? If so, sweet deal my friend. Almost as sweet as winning over a million dollars.

It's really really really hot. Like "Man, I'm not going outside between the hours of 10 and 10" hot. Women also wear next to nothing, which pwns. But they don't wear anything in the casinos either, and it's air conditioned in there. I remember watching the news last year and they had a weatherguy talking about how they were expecting a cooldown in the week after I left - the highs were only gonna be like 108.

As for my story: cracked aces early on with JJ on a j high flop. Cracked aces later on AIPF with JJ on a J high flop, though I had him significantly covered. 11 handed (6 got seats) AA > AK to double+. AA with 8 left reraised PFR. Did not play another hand.

Basically: get aces, crack aces, let others bust. profit.

What about renting a suite for a night and throwing a little party - sharing the cost among all of us shouldn't be too bad. Let's use this thread to come up with the list of people who will be in town, perhaps what hotel they're staying at so if we do the suite thing we choose a convenient spot.

I'll be at the MGM Grand (thanks to Party Poker).

Frankly, I have no idea what I'm allowed/not allowed to disclose. So, ummm, they're sponsoring me in some tournaments over the summer and (obviously) the PCA in January. Other than that, I'm going to be in school so I wouldn't really be able to play anyways. Hopefully they'll extend it after this year and let me play whatever I want.

[/ QUOTE ]

Overlay is like Fight Club,

BUT

B/C i have love for the MTT Community and I'm pretty sure most of you aren't in on this/it will help more of you than it hurts, plus b/c I already have my seat -

The Bodog guaranteed seat tourneys have a sick overlay and are really soft. I won a 72 person $67.50 tournament to get my seat. You start with 250BB (5/10, 2500) and the quality of play was slightly better than the Stars 20/180s.

They have 67s, 135s, and 270s, giving away 40 seats this weekend and 40 next.

BTW: the final hand gave me a heart attack. i had him covered about 60/40 and checked 83o on the button.

Flop was 983 one diamond. Either my memory is a little off or the button is flipped on bodog, but I led, he raised, I pushed, he called with 96dd. Turn was the 7 of diamonds. River was a black duece.

Soul Rebel

I'm also going as part of the prestigious team bodog. Yeah, the overlays on those things are unreal. I won a $270 that guaranteed a seat and had 30 people in it. I started the HU match as a 30/70 dog and played pretty well and came back. I got saved by a six outer at one point when I was all in as a shortstack. It was pretty funny, the guy's buddies were already wishing him luck in Vegas and then my card hit on the river. Definitely the most intense HU match I've ever played, it took 45 minutes.

I also won 2 prelim seats in the full tilt $215s (they are soft). So I'll be at the Wynn for a little more than 3 weeks starting mid-july, its gonna be amazing.

Prelim seats is my next mission. i'm going to buy into event 6 with W$ but am hoping to win my way in to everything else I play. Havent won one yet but all the Tilt and Bodog prelim sats I've played are really soft. Not the same overlay tho. Somehow 44 people will sign up for a 50+4 on bodog for a $2500 package instead of paying $15 more to play against a few more people for 5x the $

How does the $2500 expenses work with bodog? Do they just give you cash and you get your own travel and hotel, or reimburse, or hook you up?

I highly recommend the Full Tilt $215s, they pay 1 in 10, so much less variance than the bodog $54s or full tilt $75s. I'm like 2 for 3 in those, the bubble play was absolutely horrendous in each of them.

I'm in, via a Stars $320. 103 runners, 2 seats. I had been running hot the night before and won a few hundos. My wife was out of town, and I decided to give this a shot about 5 minutes before it started, i saw that like 1/3 of the field got their money back, so if I got that far it was like a freeroll. After reading Adanthar's sat post, I don't like that structure as much, but hey.

Won a big pot with JJ against AQ to get up near the top. Called down an aggro with TPQK in a tough spot to really be up there, and two seats got in, so I was able to just steal enough to keep my stack way ahead, and let the other guys battle.

I'm arriving 7/27, and playing 7/30, day 1C. I'm staying Monte Carlo, and look forward to meeting you guys.

stars terms and conditions say they will roll it over if you won on another site and have proof.

_______________

Q: What happens if I have won a satellite on another online poker site and then win a satellite on PokerStars?

A: Our rules clearly state that you must play the first seat you win. However, if you have already won a WSOP seat on another site, we will gladly roll your seat over to the following year. We will ask for proof that you've won a seat for this year so please be prepared to present proper documentation (example: email from Harrah's confirming your start date). web page (http://www.pokerstars.com/wsop/faq/)

So has anyone scored a house or somewhere to stay for the WSOP? Stars ostensibly has my hotel room and everything (EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVEN'T GIVEN ME ANY CONFIRMATION INFO) but I want to be there early, like the 10th or perhaps even earlier if everything works out.
I'll get a hotel room if nobody has, but I need to start working all this [censored] out so I can get everything together and get ready for my trip.

I won a bunch of 180 mans and stuff tonight, so I catapulted way way way into the top 100 of the month. I hadn't played too much this month, and I wasn't even in the top 100 before tonight. I haven't played any satellites to the WSOP except for last month's top 100 TLB freeroll. I got 8th in that, and I was wasted at the time, so hopefully, this month I will win it. WEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!

BTW, since I have taken vacation days sooooooooooooooo many random times just to play poker all day, I have literally no vacation. That is the main reason I haven't even tried any satellites. However, if I freeroll into the ME, I will play in it. I will just tell them I have to take 2 weeks off. If I can borrow vacation time, great (I accrue at 10 hours/mo), otherwise I will take unpaid leave or quit or whatever. I am not passing up a free shot at a bazillion dollars (horrible odds or not).

Won my entry 4/8 on my first try through Pacific Poker $125 buy in.

I was not eligible to play until Harrah's changed their policy on employee spouse's which we were notified of the first week of April 2006.

It looks like the WSOP has modified their first day rules to specify a stopping point in time instead of the play down to 800 players.

1 - $25-$50
2 - $50-$100
3 - $100-$200
4 $25 $100-$200
5 $25 $150-$300
6 $50 $200-$400
END OF DAYS 1A, 1B, 1C, and 1 D

ill be at the ME. i spent about $500 attempting to qualify. i qualified through stars playing a $16 double shoot out which qualified me for the $650 sunday qualifier.

on the sunday qualifier w/ 200 players left i was in 200th place. dead last. got pocket kings and w/in an hour i was in first place.

first time going to WSOP too.

i PMed annie duke on here when i first registered back in early 2004 and was chatting about various things w/ her. i told her i was just learning the game and at the end of one of my messages, i said "see you at WSOP 2006." i thought i was joking at the time.

Bwana,

I actually live between Pflugerville and Round Rock off of Grand Avenue Parkway, but easier to say Austin, heh.

The wife and I are actually driving to Vegas, for a variety of reasons, although a direct flight seems like a great idea right now, as I've been run into 2 times in the last 7 weeks in my car. Buncha savages in this town.

PM me if you're interested in playing some low stakes tourneys over July 4 weekend.

If nothing else, we'll have to grab a beer in Vegas and represent the 512. /images/graemlins/cool.gif

After 2nd twice and 3rd once in other WSOP satellites on Bodog and Stars I was obviously thrilled to finally win a seat and join "Team Bodog". I'm really anxious to find out which day I'm going to play but Bodog said it could take 2-4 weeks, hopefully I'll find out sooner.

Got my seat through an affiliate promotion on Eurobet. Pay enough rake, they give you a free seat in a satellite to a satellite. Had to make the top 5 of 9, then win a 19 man tournament. Time zone meant I had to start at 6am on Sunday morning, but it was worth it....

Can't wait to get to Vegas and get away from the winter.

Qualified myself last night at Pokerstars.

First won a $27R WSOP satellite to 650 event took 650 w$ unregistered it on July 1st. Then won another $80 sng one table took second 640w$ on the next day.

Last night was my first attempt of Stars DS $160. After two and half hours I turned 160 w$ into a Stars WSOP package. What I really like is the large travel bag of Pokerstars goodies - must worth 100000 Stars FFP points? The trouble is I have to use 2 weeks of my vacation time - hope I max it out and reach FT.

Now, I'll blow the rest 1K or so w$ to win second package's cash value.

I didn't sleep last night at all after winning the seat. Really, turning $27 satellite buy-in into a $12000 Stars package is 1:400 shoot up. Next target repeat the same on the 10K ticket...

$27 for 9 night vegas hotel and large bag of Pokerstars goodies alone is a good deal, not to mention a lottery ticket for 7+ million $$$

OMG, I finally won a seat in the WSOPME. I probably have spent $3000-4000 on this, playing countless qualifiers on PS, FT, and Bodog - but today I entered a $109 on UB to win a $1050 seat, and then tonight in the $1050 I won the $12K package (after almost 11 straight hours w/only 30 minutes in between). Whew!

I qualifed through the Cardplayer magazine fantasy poker contest (centered around the Bay101 tourny).

When the final table was set, I had 4 out of the 6 guys left so I felt pretty confident. Unfortunately, 3 of my guys were the first 3 knocked out so all my hope was on Nam Le. Then Ravi knocked out Danny Smith and I was down 2-1 in chips heads-up and I actually prayed for a miracle (and I'm not religious).

Somehow, Nam won the tourny 10 minutes later and I've been on cloud 9 since. I play on Day 1D. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yeeeehaaah!!!

I never play tourneys anymore. I have a baby now and cannot spend the consecutive time on the computer a tourney takes. Still, I took a chance on Sunday, the last day of Stars qualifying. I chose to play a $5.50 (!!) turbo super on a lark. I finished in the top 69 to advance into an 81 player double shootout.

I almost bought it at the first table when I was all in at table 1 with A2 vs AK, but I spiked a 2 and won the first table soon afterwards.

At the final table I was nervous but I eventually realized everyone else was more nervous. I won a couple coinflips and got heads-up with a 2-1 chip lead. Eventually my opponent cracked from the pressure and started going all-in every hand. I let him bully me a bit until i woke up with AJ, limped, he went all in, and I called. That did the job. It was cool to bring my wife in to see me make the call and for me to win. She liked that a lot. Of course she's still mad I played the satellite and stuck her with baby duty (on principle.)

I skipped the hotel and took the Stars $1000 cash option and am staying at Circus Circus. I'm a cash game player so I have no illusions about my tourney skills (as my choice of super-satellite entry investment confirms.) So if I go busto I can pocket most of the hotel $$. I'll play to win of course, but figure if I get deep into the tourney the extra hotel cost I might incur will be mitigated if I cash in the ME.

$5.50...I think a double quarter pounder meal costs more...wouldn't it be something...

It was interesting hearing all your stories. Good luck in the ME.

Carpe Diem!

07-25-2006, 12:12 AM
Hey, congrats CarpeDiem. I think I was at your final table in that double shootout... I don't think people were nervous, it was just a donkfest of 5.50 turbo winners /images/graemlins/wink.gif I had entered by mistake in the first place. I had intended on unregistering but couldn't until 20 mins before it started and I forgot about it. Doh. GL in vegas.
