Why do you need an edge?
Can someone please explain why people advocate requiring an edge in ICM calculations before acting? Surely if a move is +$EV then you should take it, even if it is only +0.1%.
Is the edge designed to counter inaccuracies in estimating opponents' calling/pushing ranges? |

dont forget that the next hand might be an even higher EV move

Re: Why do you need an edge?
Edge factors in how far ahead you are of the other players at the table (in terms of chips and position i.e. UTG -> next hand will be BB).
The point is, that while a move might be slightly +EV, you don't really have to take the risk, for example because you're CL (big edge) and don't need those chips very bad. It tries to reduce variance by minimizing risks when not necessary. |

Re: Why do you need an edge?
Good example where auto-edge ajusts appropriatly for anyone who wants to try for themselves:
Blinds 300/600 Hero (UTG): 15000 CO: 3000 Button: 3000 SB: 9000 BB: 1000 Hero is dealt AQo clear +EV push (0.49% difference), it isn't even that dangerous, because other biggie is calling super tight (4%). But we have such a huge advantage in our CL that the edge is auto set to 0.60% which makes this a fold. |

Re: Why do you need an edge?
Yes they have developed it. It is often refered to as a brain.
Your cards do not matter in terms of creating a higher EV push. It comes down to knowing your opponents hand ranges and taking a slight edge can be extremely -EV for your overall tourney expectation if you know you have a greater edge on the next hand due to your position or position of villians. |

[/ QUOTE ] I had understood it to mean taking into account your expected edge over the table or opponents. Ex: if you had a 60-40 edge over the table, why would you knowingly enter a 50.1-49.9 coin toss? |

Re: Why do you need an edge?
While that might be what is generally meant with an "edge", the ICM term "edge" is something else. As I stated above...
