Default checking after the river...

Hello,
my brother and I had a little disagreement this weekend about checking after the river. We were heads-up and we both checked. He was first to call. He says that after the check on the river, we both have to show our cards... and I think that since he was the first to ''bid'', he has to show his cards (and I don't if he has me beat).
Could you help me settle this ruling.

I've never really ran into this problem becuase most of the time in hands like this the players I play with just both flip it up but I think the person that last lead the action flips up first in most cases.

edit: read post above mine, I guess both have to show

Are the live rules different than online play? I don't play live very much so didn't think about it.

Online the person that would act first if there was another round of betting would show first followed by the next to act and so on and others could show if they beat the highest hand ahead of them or muck if they don't.

As far as I know, the player to the left of the dealer shows first. The next player can then choose to show or not.

Yeah that's what I meant except you said it better. My responses are always so wordy.

Each live game can have its own rules but generally as stated here. Except the standard rule would be that whilst the next player can muck if beat, the winner can normally insist on seeing the cards. However, it is generally accepted that it is bad form to do so.

So what I am hearing is that there is no official ruling for this situation.

See: http://pokercoach.us/RobsPkrRules6.htm

Look in paragraph 7 of the showdown section.

If the river is checked down, show in order from the dealer's left.
