Oz is cool; The Wire is much better. Basically what everyone else said.

Triumph: The 4th season of The Wire is available for preorder on Amazon. You're gonna LOVE the part where McNulty gets shot in the head.

Oz can never rise above the fact that it has a pretentious narrator who preaches to the audience week in week out. I have no idea what they were thinking with that.

The Wire is definitely in The Sopranos league. Arguments about which is better are probably futile because they're both brilliant, but they also both have strengths and weaknesses, so really it just comes down to the viewer's tastes and aesthetic sensibilities. The Wire is stunningly good, though. Just as with The Sopranos, people will remember and be talking about it for a long time to come.

I am a huggge sopranos fan, to the point where if u say a line from the show i can pretty much tell u which ep it is from and what character said it. I never thought it was possible for me to think any other show was greater than the sopranos.
AZK recommended 24...i watched it...not in the same league as the Sopranos..
Then I watched the wire based on OOT's recommendation and it is unbelievably good. Definitely better than the sopranos

The Sopranos was a far more psychological show - how people react internally. The Wire has never really covered this territory - at least not in the first three seasons.

They're both awesome. Putting one miles ahead of the other is just insane.

Claunchy - ty. Thanks for the spoiler, too - you're going to love it when Tony Romo gets shot in the head.

Also, once again, I have no clue why people insist on posting huge spoilers in a thread where someone is asking whether to watch a show.

Oz is entertaining in a fast paced look at the car wreck kinda way.

To compare it to the Wire is frankly retarded.
