In The Midnight Hour--The great Wilson Pickett song covered by just about everybody, but the Roxy Music version is like no other. The reggae version by the Toasters is great too.

Hole's version of Gold Dust Woman--perhaps the best cover ever.

Joe Cocker's cover of Love Is Alive, originally by Gary Wright rocks with lots more power.

The award for most offensive cover of a Joni Mitchell song has to go to Adam Duritz or perhaps Counting Crows for "Big Yellow Taxi." The CSNY version of "Woodstock" does get an honorable mention, though. How anyone could prefer this to the original is beyond me.

Gin and Juice by Cletus T Judd. It just sounds a lot funnier all bluegrass/country-fied.

One thing I hate about some covers is that they are played too faithfully, like note for note, to the original. If you're not going to bring anything new to the song, don't frigging play it.

The aforementioned STP verison of Dancing Days is one of those for me.

Grand Funk's version of The Locomotion is better than the original. Genesis' version of You Can't Hurry Love is great. And of course Manfred Mann's Earth Band's cover of Blinded By The Light blew the original Springsteen away. GNR's version of Knockin' on Heaven's door is a good version. Pearl Jam's version of that car wreck tune (can't recall the title) is good.

The Pearl Jam cover is called "Last Kiss" and it was originally done by Wayne Cochran & the C.C. Riders. They had little success with it, but Frank Wilson and The Cavaliers covered it in 1964 and it was a number one hit.

Last Kiss is good regardless and its quite sad (made so worse by a friend dying in a car crash right around its release and us getting a radio station to dedicate that song to her hourly)

...but I think Briank McKnights cover of "Crazy Love" is better than the original...

yes.
I change my vote. Counting Crows doing Big Yellow Taxi is the worst cover and biggest travesty ever.

I get angry every time I have to suffer through 2 seconds of it on the radio (never longer than 2 secs as I change the channel before having to kill myself).

Twice recently I have caught a few seconds of this one on the radio on the way to work. Both times I raced over to Mark's desk and borrowed his copy of Joni's "Hits" CD to do what I could to get it out of my head.

Possibly the greatest musical travesty of all time isn't a cover per se, but Kenny G's overdubbing of himself over Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World." I will actually confess that I've never heard it, but I'm willing to take Pat Metheny's word for it. This one made the rounds several years ago, and is some of the finest vitriol I have ever read. I consider it must reading.

"Metro" by Berlin has been covered at least twice. One by Alkaline Trio and by System of a Down. Both of those covers are very good.

I do lead vocals in a cover band. My favorites covers in history are:
How Sweet it Is (James Taylor)
Me and Bobby McGee (Joplin)
You Really Got Me (Van Halen)
Knockin on Heaven's Door (Guns + Roses)
Turn the page (Metallica)

Most overrated cover : Sweet Child of Mine by Cheryl Crow

Dave Matthews Band's cover of Hendrix's (Dylan's) All Along The Watchtower is definitely better than the original.

I don't really think it's better, but it's definitely a sick song to experience live by DMB.
