The Economist article about online gambling
This weeks issue of the economist had an interesting article about the WTO battle going on between the US and Antigua regarding online gaming.
WTO found in favor of Antigua (this is old news) however most people feel the US will not change their laws and the situation will remain as is. However, apparently with the WTO win if the US does not comply then Antigua is allowed to pirate US software/music/movies according to the WTO rules. So the next step for legalization of gambling might ironically be to sell pirated copyright material. Here's hoping Antigua follows through with the pirating and the movie/music industries raise hell in washington. |

Re: The Economist article about online gambling
The best thing that could happen to the United States economy is if the WTO or any other country did anything to force us to tighten our trade borders. Foreign countries benefit far more than the United States from free, uninhibited, open trade with us. All of the economic investment and opportunity you read about in China is because we opened up our trade barriers. We exported millions of jobs and gutted our middle class in order to benefit countries like China and we got NOTHING in return. No one is going to put economic pressure on the United States because they benefit so greatly from open trade with us. If Antigua tried something like that they would feel the wrath of every major industrialized country who is profiting from the destruction of the middle class in the United States.

Re: The Economist article about online gambling
From 1993 to 2002 the United States lost a net total of 879,280 jobs to free trade. You can't justify anyway that does not negatively impact the economy in the US.

[/ QUOTE ] lotteryOrpoker is the only guy making sense in this thread. Free trade is bad for the USA. Millions of high paying jobs have been lost to India and China. The only people who benefit from free trade are the corporations. The general population loses. Fair trade is the solution, not free trade. Tariffs need to be put on goods as well as services to stop the massive loss of jobs. |
