I don't know if the prices of these watches vary based on the price of precious metals or exchange rates (as these are hand-made in Germany). About two years ago, the particular versions of these (platinum, I think) that I saw in Europe were going for ~18k euro.

I never understood why watchmakers never made a cheaper version (say for $500) that are similar in aesthetics but with poorer components and craftsmanship.

I think it's the A. Lange & Sohne The Lange 1815. I couldn't find one with a blue dial, but they were selling a white dial with a platinum case for $18,300. For a gold case $11,900.

That is one seriously beautiful watch. I must now resist the urge to quaduple my budget.

I visited Tourneau at the King of Prussia mall to take a look at some watches. A few of my thoughts.

When you first enter a store, there is nothing more uncomfortable than 7 salespeople all standing in a circle talking, and when they notice you suddenly going silent and all 14 eyes staring at you and nobody making a move.

Anything over 40mm would look silly on my wrist.

IWC make nice watches. Unfortunately, the ones that I liked were both too large and too expensive.

They didn’t have the Girard-Perreguax Classic Elegance and the GPs they had weren’t very attractive to me.

I must look like the worlds biggest chump. Out of the 7 seven salespersons, they send over the young, attractive saleslady to assist. I almost bought a watch right there and then. Good call on their part.

I am all but sold on the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control. Aesthetically, it’s what I’m looking for. Everything I’ve read about the movement suggests it’s topnotch and it’s right in my price range.

Anyway my birthday’s in November so I have some time be blown away by something else but as of now I’m going with the Jaeger.

Bump. This thread got me looking at watches and I wound up buying one of these.

I took a look at the Marathon website. All the watches that I looked at state: This watch is available only to Government and approved Departments and Ministries. Sounds like a pretty serious timepiece.

I'm a sucker for that "this is the gear the professionals use" hype. Now if I ever run into NASA's Neutral Buoyancy Lab safety divers I can say: "Hay Guys, We got the same watch!!!" Except that I had to pay for mine.

That Shade of blue is amazing. I thought i had narrowed my next watch to this or this, but now I might wait to see if I can find another watch with a similar face.

I think that blue dial got us all excited. It's simply stunning.
