Pros knowing only one game?
I posted here in news, views and gossip because i recalled someone told me that Layne Flack only plays low ball or something to that effect and wanted more insight.
I know that most poker pros who make money playing one game is usually no limit holdem. I assume the 2nd most popular game they play is limit holdem. However, i wanted to know if there are some players who say only play a game like 7 card stud to make a living. For instance, i know keith sexton is known as the authority on 7 card stud but he also plays nl holdem. Basically what i am trying to ask is are there some poker players who are so good at one game such as 7 card stud but they are a complete fish... meaning they are an ATM in a game like no limit holdem because they just are terrible at it? Are there a lot of pro players like this? I am asking this because I am trying to become a good limit holdem player along with those other limit games like omaha hi/low, 7 card stud and 7 card stud hi low but I don't even want to ever play no limit holdem anymore b/c i don't like it. Basically i want to stick to one side and thats limit. Are there any pros who by chance make a lot of money as their living by playing a rare game like triple draw 2-7 and only playing that one game because they are so good at it that they don't want to play other games b/c they know they are lesser skilled even if they learned more? Like they play 100/200 triple draw 2-7 and that is the only game they play to support himself or herself? Can anyone also give an example of a pro they know that does this? Any insight would be great. Thanks for any comments. |

Re: Pros knowing only one game?
well i dont feel i am a kind of no limit person which is why. Limit is more about the cards, no limit is more about the player. I WANT to be a player and card person type but I can never think beyond the 3rd level. Actually i can think to the 3rd level but i do not know how to apply it which is why i prefer limit because its much more about the cards.

[/ QUOTE ] I would think it would be hard to make a living off of 2/7 lowball or PLO8 (or maybe even stud?)...B&M casinos don't spread these games like they do NL, everybody wants to play NL, so that's what the casinos give them the WSOP is a perfect example....you hear all the old-timers and top-notch pros saying they want more variety and different games, but the majority is still NL because thats what sells, thats what the masses are learning/playing, that's what's lucrative right now |

There was a guy on high stakes poker last year, I believe his name is Corey Ziedman and they said he makes alot playing high limit 7 card stud professionally.

Re: Pros knowing only one game?
High limit stud is still pretty prevalent in the Northeast (AC & FW). Back when Mohegan still had poker, they semi-regularly got a 300/600 limit O/8 game going.

Re: Pros knowing only one game?
Cory Zeidman is actually a very tough Stud player, who isn't all that good at NL Hold'em. Not sure about his other games.
Nick Frangos is a very good Stud player, but much better at NL than Cory; Stud his probably still his best game. Ted Forrest is a beast in all games, but he is probably a bigger favorite in the Stud games versus Hold'em. A lot of people don't know Scotty Nguyen is probably a better Omaha-8 player than a NL player in tournaments. |

Re: Pros knowing only one game?
Getting back to OP, the reasons not to specialize have been written about in several places, inlcuding Ace on the River and Steve Zolotow's short essay in Super System 2.
The idea for high stakes players is, there could often be times where there is a great game going with weak players, but you can't play because you don't know the game. At low limits, you're not going to find reliable games at anything other than NLHE or 4-8 LHE in most casinos. |
