Re: top pair checkup
[ QUOTE ]
river is a must bet since you're most likely chopping at worst and it's at least possible to get a chopping hand to fold. [/ QUOTE ] I completely disagree. I like the turn raise to charge spade & pair + gutshot type hands (and if you get him off an ace then, that's a sweet bonus), but if he called the turn raise with an 8 (including 87 type hands, which have now improved), he's almost never folding the river. IMO, you lose to a blah ace far more often than your bet gets him off a chop. Check the river. |

Re: top pair checkup
100 % agree with aragorn.
He has oesd/flushdraw/good8/Ace and two of those are obviously not folding and the other two are not calling anyways. The only value could be if you're positive he missed his draw and you don't want people knowing you played 810 this way. |

Re: top pair checkup
River value bet is prob too thin, otherwise well played.

Re: top pair checkup
Whats the reasoning behind waiting for the turn to raise?

Re: top pair checkup
I like the first 3 streets, but I'd check the river for reasons stated above.
Curious - if UTG had called the turn bet, what would you do? |

Re: top pair checkup
Sailboats -- I remember that conversation. We were discussing cold-calling suited aces on the button. It HAS been shown that cold-calling Axs is -EV. Those hands just don't play well against raises. Completely different story for limping...
DosXX -- I decided to call and see what developed on the turn. If a 5, 7, or spade rolled off, I might be able to find a fold or just call. But if a card came off that made my top pair more likely to be good -- or if I had fold equity with a raise -- then I could raise the turn. I thought the A was a good card to continue my plan to raise, because it was HU by the time it got to me, and it wasn't too likely that SB fired out on the flop with an ace. The flop is too draw heavy for me to start tying 2 more opponents to the pot with a marginal top pair hand. I play T8s for its straight and flush potential; I'm not so overly enthusiastic about top pair that I go to town on the flop. That said, I did end up putting in 3.5BBs post flop with it, so... ha. |

Re: top pair checkup
I'm in the "good until river" camp. They seem to either have air or a weak A/missed A-high flush here.

Re: top pair checkup
Ya, I play it the same but check river. Online this would be perfect.

Re: top pair checkup
I like every street, but would check river. Are you hoping to push an 8 out here? I don't see what he's not going to call the river with that he called the turn with if he actually has a hand.

[/ QUOTE ] I thought 65/76 were likely hands for him (calling the turn raise with a pair and gutter) and he may go ahead and pay off. I was also thinking that there was an outside chance I'd get a chopping 87/85-type hand to fold. But after reading the responses maybe a check is better after all. |
