DENVER -- Alfonso Soriano rejoined the Cubs on Thursday and brought his smile and optimism with him.

Soriano, who suffered a slight tear of his right quadriceps muscle Sunday in New York and was placed on the 15-day disabled list, is expected to return Sept. 1. But Soriano said Thursday he feels he could be ready to return to the lineup when he's first eligible to come off the DL on Aug. 21.

"If I feel 80 percent or 90 percent, I can play right away, but I have to see, because now I feel good just walking," Soriano said. "I hope the next week I can be able to run a little bit, and [then] see what happens after two weeks."

Cubs manager Lou Piniella quickly squashed that hope, saying Soriano will not return until Sept. 1.

"If you talk to him, he's an optimistic guy," Piniella said. "If you talk to him tomorrow, he'll probably be 10 days away, and by the end of this weekend, he'll be ready to play against Cincinnati [next week]."

This is a perfect way to put it; he just makes me smile everytime he's in the game.

Also, what is Z's K rate when he pinch hits?

Hard to field a competent lineup with Aram and Alf out. That being said, I expect 1 run on 4 hits tonight.

So true, I used to laugh at the idea of owning a Wood jersey, now I'm seriously thinking about getting one. No matter what happens from here, I am really proud of him and grateful for all the hard work he put in to get back and try to help this team.

I don't like Jason Kendall, but he's been running pretty good of late.
