with a 4.0 and a 35 ACT you shouldn't have a problem imo, but still write good essays

What year are you?

I heard somewhere NU's admittance rate halved or quarted or something in last year or two. Also i would agree about the auto-in if its early decision.

Afraid it's regular decision, but I did an overnight visit ... so hopefully that will weigh into consideration.

I have a 4.0 gpa, a 35 ACT, and a load of ECs ... but my essays aren't really imaginative or great ... just solid and well-written

Sounds like you could get in just about anywhere. I had a 35 ACT, a 1500 (old) SAT, a 94/100 gpa, and hardly any ECs and got into all of the colleges I applied for.

I've heard that a very good essay will not necessarily get you admitted (but a GREAT one might), but the more important thing is that a very bad/poorly written/stupid essay could easily get you denied if you're otherwise qualified.
