I think small amounts of money are a very weak incentive. If you want to alter behavior go right to the source. If you're a regular, known as a regular tipper, and have a good reputation, the ones who can be helped might have a good chance of listening. But ultimately, people with bad behavior issues aren't changing the type of person they are for something like $0.05/hr when they can easily assume you're just some person who decided to hold a grudge or play favorites.

Snow - keep your opinions about tipping culture to yourself, thats the #1 reason why tipping threads used to be auto-locked around here. if this thread becomes a soap box it will get locked as well. This isnt the politics forum, we dont give as much leeway

If you're gonna talk to me like that, don't expect to receive a tip.

I am a dealer and have no problem with this. It’s happened to me where, after dealing for a little while to a player, they started regularly tipping me an extra dollar. I’m talking about serious regulars who generally tip $1/pot. Maybe it’s only an extra $0.05/hr like Dave said, but I understand that they are going out of their way to show their appreciation for the job I do and that is very much noticed and appreciated on my end.

goofball, the last couple of months I've used a similar system although I don't pick out specific dealers I base it more on actions. Continuously stiffing dealers probably won't help. Stiffing them when they make mistakes or do a crappy job seems more productive to me. Its like training a dog, you want to punish bad behaviour and reward good (Note to avoid getting flamed: I don't believe dealers are less intelligent then the average person, it was a joke).

By the way, today at the Borgata I gave out 6 extra tips for especially good dealing. Man, they were on tonight. The low limit floors were also especially good.

I believe in the bigger picture that what goes around, comes around. You reap what you sow.
$1 tip should always be appreciated, but is pretty far from earth shattering. The day I start stiffing dealers for a buck on principle is the day I'd need a good smack. BTW - I tip blind steals $1.

Depends on the stakes, doesn't it? I play stakes where when stealing blinds, a buck is more significant.

One thing I've always noticed about tipping--and I have a tip job and work my tail off to improve my cash flow--those who you want to punish won't get it. Those who would get it, already get it.

The day I start tipping more is the day when dealers start giving me better cards.

That said, I am a chronic over-tipper, in poker, and at restaurants. It's a function of my wife's previous experience as a waitress.

Beat: She seems to think that the minimum amount anyone should tip at a restaurant is 20%(!).

I find many a dealer who show no appreciation(and disgust) if they recieve only a $1 tip.

Currently I pretty much tip $1/hand unless the dealer has done something that down to display a horrible attitude or sense of entitlement. Obviously I skip blind steals whatever. Anyway, I play mostly at the Wynn and I'm thinking of identifying maybe 4-5 dealers who are condescending or obnoxious or generally discourteous and stiffing them all the time. Consequently I'll pick 4-5 dealers I think are very good and tip them $2/hand.

I end up tipping the same amount but a more meritocratic matter as opposed to the current socialistic system.

Please comment, and when you do please identify for yourself as a dealer or a player.

I'm a player. A random thought here:

I think your change might actually be more noticeable to the dealers if you got a stack of half-dollars, and tipped some dealers $0.50 and others $1.50. Unless you're such a regular that the dealers will compare notes about your tipping habits, tipping not at all or tipping $2 might make each dealer just think that you are cheap/generous, and not that you are commenting on their performance. The half dollars would make them take notice of you.
