If you're generally a friendly outgoing person, the hug won't be awkward at all.
I've been in this spot, and usually make a quick joke like, "Hey I want some of that hug action too" then just make it a super-quick hug.

I think you should go for a hug. Make sure you breathe heavily and rub your hands over her back/shoulders. When she tries to pull away make sure you hold on tight for about 15 more seconds, so she knows that you mean it. Girls really like this and they will feel comfortable and closer to you the rest of the night. Also make sure every time you talk to her to put a hand on her arm or leg to make sure you are making a connection here. Avoid smiling too. Showing your teeth makes you seem aggressive, and we want things to be as comfortable as possible

Doing something over the top ridiculous is waaaaaaay better then a handshake or getting out of line. I'd probably walk up to her and say something like "whoa, no hugs until after you tell me your name and buy me dinner."
