Default NL Cap game \'a la\' FTP

I see that Full Tilt is now spreading NL Cap games. No player can bet more than the cap on any one hand. Cap is set at 30 BB. I think it's a pretty good way to keep variance down at a friendly home game.

Any thoughts on that?

I don't understand. You can just lower the stakes or lower the buy-in to 30BB.

I think the NL Cap idea is horrible online and live.

Well why not call it Stud, but have a community board. Or call it Omaha but you only get two pocket cards.

Ok, psandy, we get it. Your semantic objection is noted, can we move on now?

I think I recall reading that the Big Game plays a $100k cap when they play NL, is that so?

Yes, this is how they play NL in the big game. I think it is a fine idea if you want to compromise between playing Limit and NL. It is a better idea than lowering the buy-in to 30BBs, which will just make everyone play short-stack poker, since often players will have much less than 30 BB at the start of a hand. You could also play Pot-Limit.

The cap comes into real play when players have much more than the 30BB in their stack. It's an interesting way to play without putting your entire stack at risk on the outcome of one lucky card. I played it the other night for the first time and found there was still plenty of action at the table and that pots were still good size. I definitely felt that tighter play was rewarded more often but this may be because this is a new game.

Seems like it would just be a regular NL game, except effective stacks would always be <= 30bb. Snug preflop play is important with shallow stacks like that.
