You guys really made some great points, and I can see where I erred on some of mine. I just don't see the Yanks going forward, however, without signing a power bat. If not Jones... trade for Cabrera? I don't even know.

btw my order i put the pitchers in was kind of random... i didnt really think it out beyond Santana in the # 1 spot

theres no reason to give up a bunch of players to get santana for one extra year...this has been talked about to death

they're gonna be a top 5 team next year and could easily bethe best team in 2009...

2009... sign a shortstop N move jeter to third
(furcal maybe?... i don't follow NL but i'm pretty sure he's bueno)

sign nathan to setup for mariano in his final season, and become the closer after that

sign santana

sign peavy or sheets

in between then don't trade any of your young players

I don't see why they can't easily do all of these things

The reason I believe this is important is if the Yankees don't trade for him, another team may. Santana, I believe, has a NTC and will probably force the team to sign him to an extension. If that happens, then no, the Yankees can't sign him next year.

It's hard to believe the Twins won't trade Santana even if it's just a trade deadline deal.

If Santana is traded before the 2008 season, then it will definitely come with a 4-7 year extension. If it happens mid-season, it's not as clear.

I'm sure the Twins would want the team to sign Santana to the extension. That would help them get a better deal.

...because that leaves the option of starting Joba. with Mo.

Santana is the biggest need, with another power reliever (maybe Joba?) a close second.

2008 Rotation-Santana, Hughes, Kennedy, Mussina. Obviously Pettite slides in if he re-ups...Obviously Joba is an option, although he might be more valuable in the short term in the bullpen.

[/ QUOTE ]

Isn't Joba Chamberlain a lock for next year's starting rotation? I thought Hank Steinbrenner has publicly stated this.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes, he is.

1. Adrian Beltre would not be a great pick up. In fact, it would probably be an average at best pick up. Since 2001 (excluding his contract year of 2004) he has not had an OBP of higher than .328.

2. Joba is not more valuable in the bullpen.

3. Clemens isn't coming back.

4. Schilling has stated many times that he couldn't possibly fathom playing for the Yankees after being in a Red Sox uniform.

5. Livan Hernandez can barely keep his ERA below 5 in the National League.

I do agree with you about Mazzone, though.

Things that are wrong with this statement:

1) Mo is not signing a one-year deal.

2) Nathan is not taking a job as a setup man after being the best closer in baseball over the last four years.

Beyond that, others can expand if they like.
