Default Offered an IT job - what to request as salary

Hey, I need some random advice so I figured you guys might be able to help.

I was offered a job as the sole IT person for a youth help group. Pretty much a company that goes around to high schools and does activities and stuff. It is almost exactly like challenge day. I would be responsible for making their webpage (pretty basic) and taking care of all the tech related problems, such as, I assume, powerpoint stuff, setting up programs on the computer, and solving problems.

The position is being offered to me by an ex-coworker and she is just starting up the company. She has offered to cover the costs of any schooling I need and such, but I have NO idea what to expect for a paycheck.

What should I propose?

Thanks.

What area are you in? I can't see this job paying any more than 40-50k/year in the northwest.

I currently do something completely unrelated to IT. I work as a customer service rep at a liquor store. It is part time but pays 18/hour. I make about 32k/year or so doing it but its very very boring and I don't like it much at all.

This is no doubt an entry level IT position. If you have a 4 year degree, in the Washington DC Metro area (where I live) you can expect to make about $45k-$50k.

London, Ontario. That's close to Detroit, right? I just used a couple of those cost-of-living comparison calculators that you can google for and that says you are looking at about $32k-$36k.

I'm assuming you don't have benefits with your part-time gig right now. Is this startup company going to offer benefits (other than the education one already offered?). This is one of those cases were you are going to have to look at the Total Compensation Package (Benefits + Salary).

Depending on the other benefits provided/offered I would probably ask for somewhere around $45k. They offered you the job, so don't be afraid to go high. It's highly doubtful (since they came to you) that they would run away from a big # right off the bat. They will no doubt come back and say well this is what we had in mind and then you can work from there.

You might just end up at like $35-$37. This + other benefits (education/health/etc) + (it sounds like you don't like your job right now) would still be good for you.

Thanks a ton for the replies, expecially white!

I have a meeting with them today, where I hope to get some more information. I'll post some more information tonight.

Thanks again though, it really gives me an idea of where I stand.

If you are working for a non-profit, these estimates might be a bit too high. I have done considerable amounts of IT work for non-profits that went beyond this basic stuff into stuff I would classify as "mid-range" skills - database building/programming, hardware support, networking, etc as well as help desk type stuff and made about $32k/yr (USD).

Find your local Microsoft Certification center and take the exam. Study before hand using various resources.

IRuleYouHard: Don't waste your time.

OP: Minimum wage, the job is pretty low level and you're in an area with a lot of cheap students.
