When should I take protein shakes on rest days?
Hi guys, I'm starting the rippetoe program thing posted here (thanks for bringing that to my attention, I'm excited), plus getting a good diet plan going and protein powder.. the rippetoe link has a good guide on when to take protein on workout days, but I was wondering if it matters when I take them on rest days? Or should I just get it in whenever during the course of the day? (ie is it better to take one right when I get up or go to sleep?)

you do understand that there is nothing special about protein powder right? it should only be used as a convenience if preparing a whole food protein source isn't available...

Yeah, if you can get enough real food protein that's the way to go. Good protein powders are quickly digesting and emphasize different amino acids though, so they might be better as workout nutrition.

[/ QUOTE ] ya I understand that, I just like the convenience factor to get my daily requirement.. I ask because I've heard some saying before bed or in the morning are good times and those are the times where I probably won't have a lean protein source from food readily available. |

I go with casein before bed for the slow digestion.

Second the casein protein at night.
If your rest day includes some sort of athletic activity (sports, cardio, etc) you might drink a shake right after. |

Re: When should I take protein shakes on rest days?
I wouldnt worry to much about varying your protein levels on workout/nonworkout days..just strive to get at least 1gram/lb or more a day and youll be fine.
I would concentrate on adjusting your carb level though depending on workout/nonworkout day. That will have more of an effect on your weight than the protein will in terms of bad weight (fat). Whey is a good fast burning protein that should be used after workouts. Most will generally use it as their primary protein supplement. Casein is a good right before bed protein as it takes a long time to digest and will give you a protein source while you sleep. |

[/ QUOTE ] Compared to say a chicken breast? But my 5 pound tub says it uses fast absorbing hydrolyzed whey and has extra BCAAs?!! |
