I thought the human mind was really bad at identifying patterns.

Balance
Assuming we already know what there is to know is bad, but jumpings into environments too alien is also bad. This is where balance comes into play. We want to keep challenging ourselves, but we also want to remain with a certain degree of familiarity, which gives us confidence. Learning how to balance and to recognize out-of-balance keeps us on the learning curve without risking a relapse.

Perfect illustration of this concept:

FWIW I had a bad experience w/ MDMA in terms of actual coaching. He seems like a good guy while he's coaching and definitely makes himself available and I have no problem w/ him whatsoever. I feel like he tried to imrpove my game and was attentive and all that while he was coaching, for me it just didn't work for some reason. He's the only coach I've ever had and the reason I've never hired nor will ever hire another coach that charges by the hour. I'm not saying others shouldn't use him and he has a great reputation as a coach on here and I'm sure it's for good reason, I'm just posting this so a small stakes player doesn't read this and go w/ him b/c they think it's a guarenteed way to beat msnl, it took me quite some time to get back to playing my A game after being coached.

Nielso,

I have a great idea! Use specific, detailed poker examples for all of the OP paragraphs and redeem your extremely mediocre 10k post.

You went to the effort to open a new 2+2 account while coming up with this so as to not wreck your 10k post.

You obviously care a lot about this and thought it would be a huge hit. It wasn't. It's too vague. There are no examples (until the MDMA coaching one).

Provide examples and this would probably be a good post. I'm giving you constructive critisism.

I actually chose not to include examples in the OP. The point is to understand the concepts/principles, and not to get distracted by examples that follow from it, and having people go for the quick fix instead of the bigger picture. You'll get a feel for the concepts when you try to think about them yourself and how it applies to *you*. That's what creativity is all about. That's what learning to learn is all about. It's not do this do that, but understanding *how* you develop and being able to reflect upon it *by yourself*.

That's why I put the MDMA example in there. I came across it today and I recognized the principle at work. And by going through this recognizing and reflecting on the concept, I personally understand it better now, because *I* went through it.
