Default Hand Advice from Venetian DS Bubble

I was at the Venetian playing in the Deepstack Extravaganza $330 on 6/4. It was my first casino tournament, and i was thrilled with my play, until this hand. We were appraoching the bubble, there were 48 players left, and 40 would get paid. For better or worse the bottom end of the pay structure meant something to me...not that I could live without it, but I'd rather get a little $$ than no $$. (Clearly I was playing above my bankroll....but that is a whole different problem)

I had just moved to a new table and was below average for chips at this table, but above average for the field (i had an M of 13). I was on the button when a tight player opened up for 4 times the big blind from UTG+2, the next player re-raised to 10x big blind, and then the cutoff went all-in. This would have put all my chips in.

After lots of thought...I folded my AK suited...I thought that most likely smeone had a big pair (AA,KK,QQ), and certainly one if not both of the others would have an Ace. So I was trying to see the value in my hand versus the pot odds I was being offered. I figured if I won the hand I would go deep in the cash, but getting in this pot puts me all in...anyway....I was fairly certain a better opportunity to pick up chips would come along. It didnt, but I limped into the money. Not the best feeling, but not bad for my first "big" tourney.

So...What would you do?

Thanks for your help!

Had a similar situation just a few days ago. Throwed away my AK. The others showed JJ and AQ. Flop came AKT. "Damn I would have flopped two pair". Turn was blank but the River was another J busting the set of Jacks with a straight from the AQ hand.

Without folding I would have been severely crippled and forced to go all-in the next hand.

It's a tough decision. But with a raise and a re-raise in front I would consider AK a very speculative hand.

I lost my tournament just a few hands later as I raised pocket 77's and a big stack put me all-in with ... AK. I called and he caught an ace on the flop.

As always AK can be a great hand but you should be able to afford to play it.

I would fold everything except KK and AA in that situation.

good fold.

In the future you would get better advice posting hands in the High Stakes MTT Strategy forum.

You really should not be adjusting your play to survive the bubble (but it seems that you know this) because the real money is in the top three spots but you should recognize that others tend to play tighter around bubble time. With that in mind CO's range can't be any looser than JJ+/AK and MP's range is probably fairly tight too (sans reads). AA/KK are strongly in everyone's range - let this one go.

Without reading other posts, I'd fold this in a $10 FullTilt donkament. Hope the table CL woke up with Aces and wiped out several shorties . . .

Thanks for the advice everyone. Here's what happened...

Blinds folded...original raiser folded...re-raiser called...

Caller turned over KQ spades and CL turned over A-9 clubs. I almost threw up! the flop came Ace high and the CL took down a huge pot. I think the caller thought the CL was just trying to re-steal and puSh the table around.

Obviously I would have won, but that wasn't realy important here...the decision I had was the important thing.

Hopefully I will see more late tournamnet action in the near future.

FYI, thanks for the tip, next time i will post in the MTT fourm ( I'm a longtime lurker, but newbie to posting on 2+2).

I think the moral to this story is, just because others play badly doesn't mean you have to as well.

I'm not going to be a prick like a lot of people on this forum can be when they talk about how obvious and easy this fold is. It's always a little tougher when you're the one sitting at the table actually making the decision.

AKs looks good, but not when you see three raises from three different players before you even have to touch a chip. I might go broke with KK here depending on the specifics of the situation and the players involved, but I'm not even considering playing QQ or worse.

Just muck this one and be thankful there was so much action in front of you that you were able to see how dead your hand was without losing any chips.
