Re: Want to start listening to Vai and Satriani - album recommendation
It may be hard to find , but get your hands on a copy of the soundtrack to the movie : CROSSROADS. Steve Vai plays all the guitar in the movie (not Ralph Macchio) and it's some of his best work.
The movie is worth watching just for the cuttin' heads scene at the end.....amazing Vai work. |

The keyboards on some of their older work is kind of lame. But since Jordan Rudess joined in 1999, Dream Theater's keyboards have been awesome. But if you're checking out Dream Theater, might as well check out Liquid Tension Experiment. This is a side project of the group. In 1998, the drummer and guitarist of Dream Theater formed a group with the keyboardist of the Dixie Dregs (Jordan Rudess) and the bassist for King Crimson (Tony Levin). They made two completely instrumental albums that is full of incredible guitar playing. But Petrucci and Portnoy of Dream Theater clicked so well with Rudess that they fired Dream Theater's guitarist and replaced him with Rudess. As for Petrucci, Vai, and Satriani, they each have various strengths. Petrucci's strength is alternate picking. Among the three, he is (by far) the fastest picker. However, he doesn't excel at tapping, legato playing, usage, whammy bar usage, or ability to make unique sounds come from the guitar. Vai is probably the most experimental of the three and is a great tapper as well. Satch excels at all of those areas and is probably the most musical of the 3. |

Anybody mention the G3 album? Vai, Satriani, and an out of place Eric Johnson.
