After workouts I usually have pop tarts with my protein shake for the simple carbs...good or no?

Not sure. Post the nutritional info for them. I perfer to add Dextrose (2:1 dextrose carbs to protein grams) to my PWO shake for the insulin spike. Very cheap and very effective.

As far as your diet goes, I should've specified more. You seem to be eating the right stuff, but what is the quantity like? How many calories are you getting each day? How much protein?

I don't really count calories - maybe I should start. Protein I get plenty of between all the meat and the milk and 3-4 protein shakes with skim milk - not counting makes me be extra-sure to get plenty.

Plenty meaning "well over 1 g/lb body weight."

If you wanna get serious enough to blow money on useless supplements, the least you can do is start counting first.

Oh and 3-4 protein shakes per day is OVERKILL. I try not to have more than two because FOOD IS BETTER.

One shake for breakfast if I don't have the time to cook (otherwise use one as a quick snack). One shake for PWO.

Protein shakes are food. You can get by doing solely shakes for weeks. Yawn.

I guess I should start counting then.

As for protein shakes, I really don't think you can overkill them. Sure food is better, but they are convenient and I don't always have time to cook. I can't imagine taking less than 3 on days I workout, regardless of if I'm able to cook.

for a lot of people "protein shake" doesn't necessarily just mean protein and water...you can put other stuff in them that makes then more portable, faster, easier than cooking standard meals...whle getting the same nutrition as eating solid foods...
