So the receiver can just run right through the defender as long as he's not "going for the ball"?

The "official rule" is that no player may "intentionally impede" the other player's progress toward the ball, especially when not playing. Gates DID turn around and move back, I saw it with my own eyes. Is it close? Yes. By the letter was it the right call? Also yes.
