Default tournament fees...too high or what?

I regularly play at the Taj in Atlantic City. The midnight madness tournament draws scores of people. There are generally lots of weak players. During the week the buy in is $38 plus a $12 fee. 24% is generally a high amount for a fee.

How do you know when a fee is too high for live tournament play? I like this tournament but is it not worth playing with a fee like this?

What's a good rule of thumb as far as tournament fees? Is this too much or what?

30/5
40/6
100/15
300/30
500/50

10% is great
under 10% is fantastic
Over 15% is really bad

Theres a casino in northern minnesota that runs a 23$ + 7 on saturdays. what a bargain.

In general, yeah, tournament fees are getting high. Most casinos are finding themselves increasing their fees, not decreasing, as a percentage of the pool, over time. Why? Because they can. NLHE is getting pretty popular, and they are charging whatever the market will allow. If you dont like the fees, you can talk to their management, you can vote with your feet and refuse to play, but by in large, we are simply at the mercy of the market. If we want to play poker against weak fish that dont realize that a 15% vig is ridiculous, well.. we get to pay that same 15% vig to play.
