Headphone question

I bought some sony headphones for $20 about 2 years ago. I use them mostly for listening to my pc's music collection. These things are killing my ears! everytime i hear music my ears hurt and I don't even have it loud.

Can you guys that know more about this stuff please recommend me some headphones at around the $40 dollar range? headphones that I can listen to music without killing my ears?

Do you have small/large ears?
for ~$100(on sale or something currently at amazon but is normally ~$200, very good reviews from what I saw):

I use these(great headphone for the price ~$50, but has moderately bad noise cancellation the potential to be slightly uncomfortable to me at least after 4+ hours of use sometimes...I'd imagine that that is true with most headphones though...):

What kind of "hurt" are we talking about? (Crush your physical ear, blast-out your eardrum, what?) What kind of headphones are you using? (Outside the ear, buds, what?)

I bought these when Woot was selling them at 2 pairs for $15, and they're stunningly good. Like, good enough that there are whole genres of music that I like now that I didn't like before. (I'm serious.)

The problem is, now I can never go back to those $8 earbuds ever again. [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

(over the ear) eardrum hurts and i don't even have the music on loud. I have them connected not to the computer but to a small subwoofer speaker.

Do you think this is even a headphone problem or are my earsdrums just bad at this point? I don't know if the quality of the headphone is going to help my eardrums but im guessing if I had bought a better quality set 2 years ago my ears wouldn't be as bad.

actually i just found the ones im using sony mdr-v150 (bought em in 05)
Im surprised at the positive reviews. I'm really now starting to think i ruined my ears drums for good [img]/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

have you tried using earbuds, like those that come with the IPods? If you like them go with the ones that sam(admin) recommended or something of the sort. Also... may seem like a stupid question but do you where glasses while you have these on?

This comes down to a few things and which is more important to you:

1)Type of headphones (over the ear *cans*, on the ear, or earbuds)

2)Amount of money you're looking to spend

3)Quality of sound you want to listen to
