Getting new pc without OS, but SATA hard drive
hey guys,
im getting a new pc. should arrive within next few days. i ordered without operating system cause i still have xp pro and dont want anything else as it seems to be the only windows ever working (somewhat) properly. not into fancy graphics n stuff either. so no vista for me. problem is: i heard that during installation the hard drive isnt recognized by xp (therefore cant install) because it doesnt have any sata drivers within the installation file (im pretty much a noob so pls dont hate if i get things wrong) anyways i learned that i have to get some drivers on a floppy and then kinda load those before i install xp. 2p2 please tell what steps to take, what files to download and so on. im planning to plug in my current floppy drive as new pc is shipped without. (who needs floppy anyways) is it possible to boot these files from a usb stick as well? this would be so much easier. tyvm in advance

The HDD vendor will have what you need and usually it comes with the hard drives.
When the Windows XP Install starts it'll ask if you need third party SCSI drives. Hit F6. The install will prompt for the floppy when its needed.

If your drive is sata, and your cd/dvd is sata then you won't need to do anything. Just set the bios to boot off the cd and off you go (in 99% of the cases). [/ QUOTE ] Hmm I installed XP (cd from like 2002 or something) onto a SATA drive via an IDE cd drive and didn't experience any problems. *shrug*

Depends on the motherboard with IDE cd drives. Most are ok, but some can be lame. I've come across a few configurations in the past where the cd rom would not initialize w/o drivers.
With sata+sata I've never came across a problem.

as you guys said, i didnt have any problems installing xp pro.
my new pc is running pretty well right now. but i have one little issue: when i installed windows i created 2 partitions: 10GB for windows, 240GB for the rest (programs, music, etc) i formated the 10gig partition right away and installed windows on it. i formated the other partition afterwards when windows was already running. i just right clicked and selected "quick format". the issue: both partitions AND the dvd drive are shown as removable drives in the sys tray in the lower right corner. i once clicked the "safely remove dvd drive" button to check out what happens and it literally disappeared from the system. everything was back to normal after rebooting. this doesnt really do any harm but it simply sucks. i want the "safely remove hardware" button to disappear as theres just no use for it. why would i ever want to remove my drives? everything else works fine. i barely hear the fans (only have one, cpu has a giant passive cooling thing on it). i feel like im in heaven compared to the old one which was buzzing like crazy. ps: im not sure if the "safely remove" button was shown before i quick formated the second partition but i guess so. pls help 2p2 ty
