Default killer instinct

Do you need a killer instinct and be hyper competitive to succeed at the higher levels of poker? All the biographies of famous players in Bluff and CP always describe a childhood of always wanting to win....or does everybody always want to win. The reason I bring this up is that I was speaking to a successful player and he was telling me, 'you gotta do hwta you gotta do, for instance if you had to kill somebody's dog to win the tourn, u kill that mutt'. I just thought this was strange advice and wondered about it.

Poker is a competitive environment. You play to win, and you play to take the money away from others. Naturally, I think the players who have the drive and desire to be the best at whatever they do will do better than the others.
