I used to work at a bank, and I was fingerprinted for that job. I also remember being fingerprinted in 1st grade. They fingerprinted all of the kids. I don't know if either of these get into a national database that police have access to.

Even if the fully automated lookup system doesn't exist yet, I'm sure it will soon.

It does. It's just called IAFIS. While it doesn't have everyone who has committed a crime, nor everyone who has to have their fingerprints taken for a civil job it does have 47 million records.

I was printed in 1971 on a buying liquor for minors charge. In 1996 I was printed after passing my securities license exam. The prints came back from the FBI lab noting the charge from 25 years earlier. So yeah.

figuring out who dunnit solely based on a print is often very difficult. however, once you have a list of suspects and a print from the scene, it is easy to check if any of your suspects have a print on file and then compare that to the prints from the scene. this is generally what happens in law enforcment. they don't pull a print and get a name. they have a list of names and then they see if the print matches any of those names.

same thing for dna. you figure out who your suspect is, get their dna, then compare to the crimescene dna. it is used to prove someone was there, not to figure out who was there.
