Brag: Going to Train in MMA
I will train at Philly MMA in Muay Thai or Brazilian Jujitsu. I would like to train in both plus MMA, however I won't dedicate more than 3 hours per week to it.
Which one should I start with? Muay Thai or BJJ? |

Re: Brag: Going to Train in MMA
I train in Muay Thai and BJJ at the moment. I do both classes every Tuesday and Thursday and throw in another Muay Thai class on Friday for the plyometric excersizes.
If I were you, I'd start out with Muay Thai to get your cardio back into shape. BJJ will kick your ass if you're out of shape. I have never worked harder in my life than trying to roll some fat 300 pound guy off me (I weigh 200). How old are you? Age in my opinion seems to have a big effect on how often you hurt yourself while training. I'm 30, and had to take last week off because my joints were on fire after every class. |

Try some of each, decide which you like more?
Muay Thai is ideally more of a tall, gangly guy's art fwiw. |

3 hours a week is not enough time for mma training

Re: Brag: Going to Train in MMA
An hour and a half twice a week is not much. Especially when you are trying to learn standup striking, clinching, takedowns, and the ground.

Re: Brag: Going to Train in MMA
The risk of injury is too severe for someone starting out in these sports. If you're not flexable, strong, and have solid cardio, you're going to injure yourself. And sorry, but weight lifting and doing 30 minutes a day on the treadmill does not qualify for good conditioning. You need about 3 months before your body is able to adapt to the rigorous training that is involved. The last thing a new student wants to do is tear their rotator when practicing a kimura, or risk injuring their neck while rolling in a BJJ class.

Re: Brag: Going to Train in MMA
I've been lifting heavily(for me) for 8 months. I eat a lot and cleanly.
My only cardio work comes from circuit training during weightlifting. |
