Penn is a BJJ phenom, but Sherk has crazy MMA experience (40+ pro fights), an extreme strength edge, better training regimin, freakish cardio, and unbelievable wrestling - and the only guys who have ever beaten Sherk were the guys who beat BJ Penn. Seriously, Sherk will maul BJ and it's not even close. Penn had better get his game together because he's in for a war if he wants any piece of the LW title ever again.

[ QUOTE ]
BJ Penn has a huge edge against Sherk.
Penn is a winner at WW, Sherk dropped because he couldn't handle the riddum.

O ya Penn is a BJJ phenom, wayyy outta Hermes league on the ground and it really isnt even close.

Penn has also fought all the way up to HW, so hes used to giving up size.
Penn has a much better ground game than anyone Sherk has faced.
The only thing Penn gives up against Sherk is cardio.
Talent wise it isnt even close.

Sherk is a poor mans Hughes. Hes smaller and weaker than Hughes, you guys cant disagree with that.

I know Penn lost the second fight against Hughes, but at the very least you have to admit that Penn was working Hughes the first two rounds before he separated the rib. If he can do that against Hughes what makes you think that he wont do the same against someone whose just a smaller version of Hughes?

[/ QUOTE ]

Sherk is a smaller, faster, denser version of Hughes with a gas tank that just won't quit and a better game plan than Hughes brought with him to the GSP fight. Almost assuredly better wrestling too. And Sherk is huge at 155, so he's still going to outsize Penn - it's not like Penn is coming in at 170 vs. Sherk's 155.

[/ QUOTE ]

Sherk being smaller, faster, and denser i wont argue with. Gas tank, def better than Penn's.

Better wrestling than Hughes? Well Sherk didnt have a college career at all. Hughes did. Granted Sherk spent that time in MMA instead, so maybe his MMA wrestling is better? But I definitely think that this point is up for debate. I would def lean towards Hughes being a MUCH better wrestler due to his many more decorations.

Again, Penn being outsized has never been a problem for Penn. Hes fought people much stronger than Sherk and prevailed.

Being a good college wrestler doesn't necessarily make you a great MMA wrestler. In MMA, Sherk's wrestling is just as good as Hughes - his shot is much more fast and explosive, nearly unstoppable. His standup is also light years ahead of Hughes', in fact Sherk sets up his shot with strikes faster and better than anyone else in the game. BJ is a world champ at jiu-jitsu in the black belt division, and a black belt champion's jiu-jitsu is at a whole nother level from your everyday black belt. So I'm not sure we can assume Sherk will pass guard as easily as he did against Hermes; he also has to watch out because BJ's sweeps are disgusting - watch both Hughes fights and see how good he is at taking the back.

I may have been thinking a lot about Hughes v. Lytle when comparing their wrestling. Hughes did a pretty good job of outwrestling Lytle and grinding a decision victory out of him, but it didn't look nearly as complete of a domination as Sherk exercised over Franca. And the Sherk v. Franca fight was CRAZY exciting.
