Tourney Time frame - help

Could anyone tell me roughly how long a live tourney with no rebuys or add-ons would be? The buy-in is $215 and the cap on the number of players is 75. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Is this a tournament you are setting up or will be playing in?

A couple of big factors will be the starting chip stack, the starting blind level, and how quickly the blinds go up. Do you know what those are going to be?

It's one that I am interested to play in (not involved in the set-up). I believe the starting chip stack will be 5k in chips and the blinds will go up every 20 minutes. The starting level blinds will be 25-50 with an ante. That's all the info I could find out. Sorry not to inlclude this in the initial post.

The presence of blinds and antes are going to help move the action along, but the big x factors are going to be the actual field size and the predominant style of the players.

I play a lot of bar poker, but its free (so the styles are all over the map), we start out with about 1300 less in chips, and blinds (no antes) go up every fifteen minutes. We get done in about three hours and I have seen it be this way in a field of sixteen people and in a field of fifty plus people.

If the maximum field is reached, I am going to guess you should budget five hours to play.

A good rule of thumb is that the tournament is more or less over when the big blind is equal to 8% of the chips in play.

Agreed. It may end sooner (based on how the chips are spread between the remaining players, and their styles of play), but probably wouldn't go beyond the 8% level at which the tournament basically becomes an all-in lottery.

Posted this in another thread, but just for grins, here is some actual real life data from the last 12 (home) tournaments I ran. I show the number of players (not really relevant) and the BB% at the time the tournament ended.
