Default sparking charger

I went to plug in my charger for a Powerbook G4 and sparks flew out of the socket from the surge protector. What's going on..?

The sparks came at the wall when you plugged your G4 into the power strip or the sparks came from the power strip?

Either way you probably want to get a new improved power stip, if the sparks came from the wall you'll want someone who knows what they are talking about to look at that outlet. What probably happened is something shorted somewhere, most likely from the vacinity of the sparks.

That's better than it coming out of the wall. I'd get a new surge protector and spend some money on it. It should have just tripped the breaker in the protector and not sparked. The male end of the G4 plug is pretty fool proof, you should be able to look at it and see if you can see the short, although you may want to just get another one if you live by an Apple store and they still stock them.
