Re: question about where to post
This is probably the right forum for a generic question like that.
Make sure to include the kind of game(s) and limits you want to get good at. If you have a question about specific books or best books, then check Books and Publications. If you want to talk about how much "book learning" is worth how many years "experience," and how much "online experience" is equal to "live experience," then maybe Poker Theory. But, this is probably the best place to start. Here's my answer: 1) Read 2+2 books and others. Search the Books and Publications forum for recommended lists. ToP (Theory of Poker) is probably near the top of the list. 2) Have a deep bankroll for the limit you play. You can't play well with scared money. Online, 20 buy-ins for NLHE is pretty good to start out. Live you can get by with less, but don't ever play with just 1 or 2 buy-ins in your whole roll. 3) Play a lot. Preferrably on-line where you can keep hand histories and gather statistics for analysis using tools like pokertracker and a heads up display like poker ace. If you play live, then keep a journal of you interesting hands as well as you hours and wins/loses. Make sure to note limits, stacks, player tendencies, your cards, and the action in your notes on interesting hands. If you can't remember exactly, then estimate. 4) Post your interesting or questionable hands in the right strategy forums. Don't post results. 5) Analyze and respond to posts int he appropriate strategy forums. Do all that, and you'll get better. |
