Default HAY BBV REMEMBER MY GREAT DAY? I GAVE IT ALL BACK

Cliff's Notes: Last Monday I had the biggest winning day of my life, +$1200. On Thursday night I blew $1000, $200 at a time, playing live against retards in a 40bb $2/$5 NL game. B, B, and V regarding Hanging With Mr. Cooper are at the end.

I'm spending Thanksgiving weekend in Solvang, CA, which happens to be just minutes from Chumash Casino; at school I'm an hour away from here and thus make suicide-inducing variance fests at the $2/$5 game there only a monthly event, but being as close as I am and having nothing to do once my family goes to sleep I've been going there every night since Wednesday. The entire experience can be summed up in one word:

Oops.

The game there is $2/$5 blinds NL, with a buyin of $100 or $200. On Fri/Sat/Sun they run a game with $300-$500 buyin, but otherwise this is the biggest game in the room, and of course playing with 40bbs makes me want to choke, but it's the only option so whatever.

Wednesday night went pretty well. I don't remember many details but I dropped a $200 buyin before building a stack up to $650 and cashing out +$250. One hand I remember:

$200 stacks, 8[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 6[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] OTB. A couple people limp, I limp because I'm bored.
Flop is Q[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 6[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 2[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], checked to me, I bet $20, BB calls.
Turn is 2[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]. He leads out for $40. Confused, I call.
River is K[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]. He leads out for $60. Still confused, and thinking that he never plays a good hand like this, I call. His 4[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 3[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] no good.

Thursday evening rolls around, I eat Thanksgiving dinner with a bunch of people that have more money than God, and head to the casino afterwards, which was surprisingly busy on a night when people are supposed to be with their families and all.

It took awhile, but slowly I dropped about $400, don't really remember how, I think a lot of it was crap like raising up AK to $30, c-betting flop for $45, and whiffing everything and eventually having to fold. However, that's not even the good part. I only took $600 with me, and down to my last $200 the following events happen:

I raise A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] K[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] to $30 on a $200 stack behind a limper. One caller OTB, he's decent but not great; there's one good player to my left (we've been talking a lot, he's pretty smart and plays TAG), and the guy that called me is probably the third best player at the table behind the two of us. That said, he's still not that great, and that compliment is only in comparison to the rest of the downies that populate this retard-infested hellhole. Too loose, etc. Anyway...

Flop A[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 8[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 3[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]. I lead $50, he min-raises to $100. Hrm. With the FD out there I can't necessarily assume I'm behind, and I certainly didn't give him implied odds to draw out on TPTK pre-flop, so I shove. He calls, turn T[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] at which points he flips over K[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] J[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]. Lovely. Ship him the $400 pot. I know I still have a massive edge against these idiots regardless of how much I'm losing, so I go to the ATM and pull out another $300 (which I think is my daily withdrawal limit) and rebuy.

A few hands later, huge retard in CO opens to $15. Huge retard OTB calls, I call in SB with 7[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 7[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] ($200 stacks again).

Flop is K[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 7[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 6[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]. I check planning to check-raise the idiot out of his seat (I find leading to induce raises doesn't work as well live as it does online), huge retard #1 bets $20, huge retard #2 makes it $60, I decide to flat call since even these morons will see my hand face up. Retard #1 folds.

Turn: 3[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]. Awful card. I lead for $70 of my $130 total stack, mostly just wanting huge retard #2 to call so he'll be committed on the river; he shoves, I call, ask if he has a flush, he says no so I turn over my set. River is 4[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] Please, please don't have a five...villain turns over K[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 5[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] and says "nice hand, how much do I owe you," requiring the dealer to inform him that he made a straight on the river after getting AI as like a 10:1 dog. These [censored] morons, I swear to god.

I rebuy for my last $100, and shortly thereafter realize I have enough $20s in my wallet to buy in for a full $200. I play well for awhile as the game starts to die; I get up to about $300 then take a break for a little to eat a tasty breakfast burrito, and when I finish eating the game is 4-handed. They lower the rake in SH games so I figure why not; the really good player is still to my left, but we aren't messing w/ each other for the most part and the other two players in the game weren't that great. One was overaggressive and the other was just plain awful; can't fold preflop, bluffs way too often postflop, calls too loose, etc. The overaggressive player eventually busts and we're 3-handed.

I'm sitting on about $300 and raise Q[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 8[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] to $15 OTB. Huge retard calls in BB. Flop is 8[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 8[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 2[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]. He leads for $25, I call. Turn is A[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], he leads for $35, I call. River 5[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], he leads for $55, I raise to $135, he deliberates and folds. That gets my stack up to about $450.

Finally, the hand that ended my night:

K[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 5[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] in BB. Button limps, SB completes (he never, ever folded preflop on his button or SB to no raise), I check. Flop is 5[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 3[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 2[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]. MONSTER!! SB leads for $20, I raise to $60, Button (the good TAG player) doesn't know what to do and asks if I'm ready to play for stacks. I say nothing, but he eventually lays down but asks the dealer to put his cards aside so he could show what he laid down later. Dealer obliges. SB calls without thinking too hard.

Turn: 7[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]. SB checks, I bet $80. Small bet given the pot size, but in a live game the FE that a bet size carries seems to be more related to the absolute amount of the bet than its relation to the pot size (i.e. a $20 bet into a $10 pot has way less FE than a $50 bet into a $100 pot). This turns out to be pretty stupid, as SB then check-raises all-in. Hrm.

So, there's 15 + 20 + 60 + 40 + 80 + 80 + 320 = $615 in the pot and it's $320 more to me to call; just about 2:1. I have 8/9 outs to improve against a set or straight, 14 to improve against two pair or worse, and honestly, against this guy, I think there's a decent chance I have the best hand. Having played with him for the last 6 hours or so, I've seen him bluff a lot. Also, the fact that I'm stuck a lot and want to get even factors in (I wouldn't call it tilt, but rather than I'm not avoiding a high variance call in this situation if I think it's +EV). Eventually I call, he says "good call" and turns over 5[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 4[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]. SWEET, so I just have to dodge 9 outs on the river and I'll be even on the day! This is awesome!

...dealer turns over the river. 6[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]. I kill myself.

Okay, not quite, but I sat at the table in disbelief for about 20 or 30 minutes just trying to wrap my head around how much I hate poker while a new guy sat at the table and they started playing 3-handed again. The fact that I lost 3 huge pots ($400, $400, and $900) in which I was a 2:1, 10:1, and 4:1 favorite just seemed unbelievable. It felt like when my softball team blew a 9-run lead in the bottom of the last inning in the championship game a year ago and none of us wanted to leave the field afterwards; we just couldn't believe it was over. There was no closure to it, it was like we couldn't believe it was happening.

I went back last night and dropped another $250, I think. No bad beats or anything, I was just cold-decked to death; the biggest pot I won all night had $150 in it, when I check-raised all in from the SB with K[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 2[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] on a K[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] J[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 6[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] flop against someone who bet and I felt was weak (I was right, he called with J7o and didn't suck out). I got KK and QQ once each and everyone folded preflop to my raise, but I got about 5 callers when I raised JTo, JTs, 85s, etc.

So, all in all, I'm down $1000 since Wednesday night, effectively negating the huge +$1200 day I had last Monday which was the biggest win of my life and I was hoping would start a massive bankroll surge.

Just to round out the B, B, and V portion of the post:

BRAG: Mark Curry (below) of Hanging With Mr. Cooper fame was playing, though not at my table. He also had a large posse with him.
BEAT: I think some of the dealers were trying to hook the girl that runs the list, aka the most beautiful woman to ever walk this earth, up with him. Shana, though I will probably never say anything to you that isn't related to getting on the Omaha Hi/Lo interest list, I will love you forever.
VARIANCE: Mr. Cooper was playing perhaps the downiest game in the casino, $3/$6 LHE. On top of that, nobody got his name right (I didn't even remember until I looked it up on IMDB); people were like "lol it's Cuba Gooding Jr." or others said it was his brother, I think someone said Omar Gooding. I guess this could also qualify as a beat.

DJ Sensei, will you come down here and give me lessons on how to pwn live poker? Plz?

good read bro, poker sucks. You will eventually gain a huge tolerance for this as its kind of standard. My tolerance is now at +/- 3k when it use to be 1k.

max BI is 100, so after those 2 plays, that's...2 BIs. plus a few rebuys after. all in all, about $500.
