Default Working in a Bank?

So I'm in the hunt for a job. Blah blah blah, I a friend's father can get me into M&T Bank in Mortgage Collections. I obviously don't want to work in collections long, as I assume it's more or less harassing people over the phone to come up with ways they can pay back what they owe.

A couple questions for any OOTers who either have:
A)worked themselves in a bank
B)have or know someone well who has worked in a bank
C)have worked in collections

1)Room for longterm growth in a bank setting?
2)How long does one typically have to do [censored] work such as collections before moving on to other areas?

I would rather not just go into the interview cold, only to find out this really isn't for me, after a friend's father did what he could to get me the interview.

thanks

I was a teller at a local Washington Mutual branch in highschool. Almost every "local" banking/service position is very dead-end with little room to rise in the ranks beyond your own branch. Any worthwhile banking position is obviously going to come from outside the retail environment.

Might not be a ton of chances to move up but there isn't much competition either, my friend made it from teller to branch manager in 4 years, making near 6-figs now.

They must pay branch managers a lot more in the States. In Canada they don't make anywhere near 6-figures.

OP, I work for a large bank, on the corporate side. I do know a few people who have excelled on the retail side (in most banks, Mortgage Collections would be considered part of the retail bank, even if you don't actually sit in a branch), moved up through the ranks and then over to better opportunities on the corporate side.

I don't know your vital stats, and I don't know much about the bank you're looking at, but assuming you (1) are talented and (2) have a bachelor's degree, my guess is that you should be able to use this position as a jumping-off point for advancement. Because banks need a fair number of high skill workers, at least the one I work for is quite proactive about identifying, training and advancing employees who have potential.

PM me if you have any more specific questions, and good luck. Also, NH on the screenname ("As in, 'Go buy us some coffee'").

Bank got robbed.
I left that job to take a job selling womens shoes.

Youd be better off working for TSA at your local airport... easier work and it's a government job so you can't be fired from it...

I've worked in customer service in the past, and people would fly off the handle for stupid [censored]. I can't even imagine how much someone's bank account being messed up would tilt them.
