Default National Spelling Bee

Set your Tivos for tonight. It's time for that annual spectacle of watching twelve year olds crack under the pressure.

Samir Patel is out already. Guess I don't have to watch it now.

Samir knew he had made a mistake. He just wanted to get back in on a technicality.

As someone who has trouble spelling basic words when typing on a message board I'm strangley drawn to the spelling bee.

Back in like 1994 I placed 8th in the Colorado State Finals (First goes to the National Bee), and the girl that won actually was out in the first round of Nationals because she misspelled "farce". She said "Eff, ay, ar, eh-see-ee". She MEANT to say it "Eff, ay, ar, see, ee" but she rushed it and made her 'C' sound like an 'S'. I only mention this because she appealed it and had the judges review audio and video to get it reversed to no avail.

Most of the time when it's appealed it's because the player misspoke a letter and the parents felt the intent is more important the the pronounciation of the letters.

I choked in spelling bees with great force when I was a kid - every time I got eliminated, it was on a word I knew how to spell and somehow got nervous on, or I managed to screw myself by asking for definitions instead of just spelling a homonym ([censored] you "sachet.") It made me really upset at the time; now I think it's kind of amusing.
