When I move up I begin by buying short so I can afford to go to higher stakes earlier as well as see if/how the games are tougher

Please don't shortstack, that's all.
I went with 25BIs = 2500$, you could start with 20 as long as you're disciplined enough to move back down.
I wouldn't do it with less but some people do.

with $40 buy ins, 1k should be fine, just drop back if you lose 200-300. You should be fine though, especially if you know how to play 40BB deep (which is a pretty easy stack size to play well).

why shortstack?

I'd guess (don't know the math) that the variance would be higher playing a shorter stack though. 30 buyins would probably be enough, but I don't know how safe that would be (or if it would be too safe)

Variance is probably not higher. With 40BB he won't be getting in all in pre flop much at all, he will just be reducing the plus and minus swings due to the all in pots (and the all in will occur post flop probably 95%+ of the time) (and maybe getting better value post flop because he can hurt opponents less so they may be more inclined to call light). (And with 10-20 BB I have not done enough study to figure out the variance, but I am not positive it is greater there, either).

I realize it is strongly looked down upon by all the haters in the NL forums, but I play poker solely to make money, and buying in for $40 at 100NL is likely +EV compared to a $40 buyin at 50NL IMO

I was thinking along the lines of fnord: $1000 is around what I was thinking to move up, drop back down to 50 NL at 800 or so.
