Default File Sharing, Mac and PC

I've done some googling and there seem to be mutliple options out there. I was just looking for some views.

At the moment I live in a house w/ a few other people. We have a wireless network set up, no file sharing. I just acquired a Macbook and would like to share files between my PC without having to use my external hard drive everytime. What is the best way to go about doing this?

You can password protect the file shares you put on the local network. The Mac will remember the credentials Windows you'll have to keep entering them. You could also run an FTP server with a password on one of the machines, or a VNC client/server. Just make sure that those ports are closed on the router to the outside world. If it isn't going to be a lot just spend 20 bucks and get a couple of gig flash drive and run a sneaker net.

What type and size of files are you wishing to share?

I'm looking to share some music and movie files, and maybe some smaller files like documents and images. I have an external HD, which I use to back up my library so I'm not looking to transfer 30 gigs at a time or anything. More like a few albums or 1-2 movies at a time. Also, I know I can just e-mail myself smaller stuff like documents or the images, or save documents using Google Docs.

I guess I'm sort of interested in trying this out just because I've never had two computers, and it would be convenient to shoot files through the network. At same time, if the setup requires too much of me or is complicated, I can just stick w/ what I got going now.
