Thanks for the replies so far. Yeah, I have no intention of keeping large wads of cash in there. Maybe a few thousand in various currencies since I travel between the US, UK (current home), and the UAE (soon to be new home) a lot but my main concern is my watches and gf's jewelry.

I would definitely go for a in-wall safe but I'll be moving into an apartment that naturally (a) won't probably allow that even if I do own the property (b) there probably won't be a wall thick enough to cater for a safe. I'd be looking for something that could probably be bolted to the floor.

Anyways, can anyone suggest makes or recommendations, good experiences??

The reality though, is that you shouldnt need a safe, unless you have something illegal in it, or just want it to keep some spar cash/guns/jewelry away from the random people that may come in and out of your house. Ie, dont keep 100k cash in it, fan think that this is safe.

keeping a fireproof safe is good for important documents, in addition to valuables.

oh, ya, I forgot about that, fireproof is a must. I dont really have any documents other than a few car titles though that are of any importance, but Im sure most do.

Have you considered a safety deposit box at the bank?

How so? I guess if you needed access to your stuff ona regular basis this would eb a problem (though I have a safety box in the bank of the building I work in, so I am near it every day).

For important docs, a safety deposit box in a bank is prolly best.

OP - I think you are on the right track here, a fireproff safe, bolted to the floor, is definitely the way to go for the items you wish to keep. Those with guns/rifles will need a larger safe and I have seen a few of them at Sams Club/Costco for around $1000 (though I'm not sure how much instaling one/delivering it would cost).

The stuff I have in my safe, I need access to 24/7, ie, if I want to take 3 or 4k in chips to the casino at midnight, on a whim, having that money in safe deposit box is pointless (I have about 5k worth of casino chips because in missouri you can only buyin for 500 ever 2 hours). Or if I collect/owe 4 or 5k, and I need it that night, but dont know it until after bank business hours, Im screwed. For documents, use the bank though, I agree.

Yeah, but do you need 24/7 access to your watches and jewelry?

Yes, of course. If Im sitting at home on a saturday at 6pm, w/ no plans yet and I get a call from a friend to get dressed up for a night on the town, I need my watches/jewelry etc, and I dont want to have to worry about stopping during the day on saturday to pick them up.
