Yeah, this is where you choked.

See, if the initial convo had gone something like this:
Duque: "Wanna grab dinner this weekend?"
Girl: "omg of course you're so good looking and rich I'd love to!!!"

then it's fine to expect her to pay. If it goes like:
Girl: "Duque I want to go to dinner this weekend yaaaaay!!"

then you can totally expect her to cover half, and maybe even pimp your way to a free dinner yourself.

HOWEVER

When you guys make plans to grab a drink, and you escalate it at the last minute, you've just shattered the expectations. You've taken a lot more control, which means you should also be in control of the finances.

I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing to do what you did (dinner instead of drinks). I personally wouldn't do it except for very rarely, but it's not like a sin or something. Just understand how it changes the over all feel and expectations.

btw changing plans can be good I think, but you should change them laterally instead of vertically. By that I mean if you can change plans while still maintaining the same level of expectations and comfort, you're good. Going up or down can really throw the chick off and make things uncomfortable. By far the best thing to do is keep the same level of pressure/expectations, but increase the fun, which will make you seem more adventurous. You'll find that she'll end up feeling a lot more comfortable with you, too.
