Default Re: WSOP on ESPN thread (7/17) ($1500 PLH and $1k NLH w/rebuys)

Highlights:

PLHE: Gavin Smith's girlfriend. How did he get a girlfriend that hot?

NLHE: Vahedi instantly calling Gracz's stength: "So you've got a talking hand?"

I did another ESPN Hand Count this week, for the first episode. I used four categories this time. The breakdown is:
- 1 bleeding chunk (showing part of a hand, but no preflop action)
- 6 instances of flitting (showing a bleeding chunk from another table or tournament)
- 7 other pieces, five major and two minor. E.g. a piece about Bruce Van Horne's forgotten second place in the 1996 ME.
- 11 hands of poker. That's the same as I counted last time.

Does anyone know where to look up the number of hands on these final tables? I don't remember Poker News having that information.

I like watching limit more than PL. Didn't see the NL table yet. PL was boring though.

Gavin Smith's gf is pretty much a result of his large bankroll now and he's an affable guy.

What is the point of televising (or for that matter giving a bracelet for) $1500 and $1000 events? Events like these take place all the time and they are no big deal. What is it supposed to signify that someone can call themselves the bracelet holder for a $1500 buyin? It's meaningless. And for ESPN to cover it and then for the one hour only show the bustout hands is incredibly boring.

The $1K NLH (rebuy) event was so bad that the last few hands shown were all ins for huge amounts of chips like the players had already made their deals and just wanted to end it. A3o instacall for 1/2 his stack?

What were the two hands Gavin Smith had the bet about? Was it 9-5o and A-2s? Did they say that heads up 9-5 is a favorite? That seems wierd to me, I thought maybe I misunderstood.

I agree with all this, except I actually enjoy the way ESPN approaches the episodes, trying to show random, quirky or entertaining aspects of the players rather than show the details of the poker. The WPT shows a lot more poker, but I find it less entertaining overall. I stopped watching the rebuy after I busted, but the structure sucked by that point anyway, and, yeah the whole hype/mythology of bracelets is meaningless and arbitrary, but that's nothing new.

+1.

Gavin gets the beautiful ladies because he's a beautiful man. And a top Wii bowler; that's better than money or Poker.
