Default Check the turn blind on a 9-8-7 flop.

60-120 game. Folded to the buton, who raises. Small blind calls, big blind calls.

Flop comes 9-8-7 rainbow. Checked to the button, who bets; both blinds call. As the dealer is burning for the turn, small blind says, "I check" and taps the table.

What, if anything do we think this tells us about the small blind's hand, and does it make any difference how good, how aggressive, or how tricky he is?

Thanks.

I'd certainly be inclined to put him on a draw. If he is a bad LAG perhaps a monster that he is trying to make look like a draw.

I think he has a T and he's decided he's going to check/raise if he hits, and check/call if he bricks. And i'd be more inclined to think this if he is not a very good/experienced player. I think the less experienced guy might be trying to act "cool", or trying to intimidate by acting quickly. I.e., maybe a less experienced guy doesn't realiize that everyone is thinking that fast/ahead at a poker table and he therefore thinks he is unique/smart by acting fast.

But, of course, I wouldn't change what I do based on that, because who really knows. I'd just treat it as a standard check.

Why would he try to check raise if he hits? That would mean the board would be 9-8-7-J or 9-8-7-6. Aren't those boards going to discourage action behind him? In a smaller game, I think you're more likely to be correct.

He's a lag who check called the flop on the drawiest of flops and then said something. My guess is he has a hand he isn't worried about, i.e. the nuts or a draw to something he considers the nuts.

But given the board and the decent multiway pot brewing i doubt if whatever this means should change how you play your hand much.

Default What Happened

Small blind checked the turn blind, turn card was a blank (a 4, which completed the rainbow) big blind checked, button bet and small blind check-raised. Big blind folded, button called. River was a 2, small blind bet and button folded.

Just seemd to me that a blind check on a 9-8-7 board is something to be feared in at this stakes.

I don't think you can say for sure what he has, but you can be pretty sure about some hands he doesn't have.

I definitely wouldn't lay down any big hands because of this. He may have just had a ten.
