I am so touched by this thread that I must post. But there is nothing I can share without too much heartache. I simply wish to offer my condolences and make an Internet toast to cats. They have been a very important part of many of our lives.

Just wanted to say I'm sorry about your loss. I've grown up with dogs all my life, and at one time we had 13 of them, so Ive seen many pass on. But none hurt like when I lost my personal dog 2 years ago.

Things will get better with time, and get another cat when you are ready.

Zoinks, I once had a cat that loved to ride in the car. She was one in a million. I also owned a bunch that would have sworn to me, vocally, that they were riding into the bowels of hell. If possible, fly your cat there, if this requires you to go along with it, it'll be worth it.

When I moved cross-country from Atlanta to Sacramento my cat rode with me in the rental truck.

She was fine, I let her out of the 'box' and she'd drape herself on the back of my neck while we rode.

It took maybe a day longer than it would have done because she'd start to freak a little after ten hours or so on the road. I didn't tell any of the motels that I had her with me. Just made up a litter box, showed her where it was, and we'd kick back on the bed and watch TV.

I sure miss that cat. She got old and sick and had to be put down about the time I got married

Pretty friggin amazing that cats will figure that crap out instantly while dogs will just piss and poop all over and bark without rhyme or reason, run about anxiously and paw doors. Cats are way under-rated.

Probably too late, but see if your vet will give you a sedative.

This thread makes me cry. Seriously. I've lost 2 cats in the last 1.5 years. One I had to put down because of an eating disorder. The other just mysteriously died at 6 months of age. I came home, petted him and then came back to that room 30 minutes later (where he hung out on his scratch post/cat perch) and he was sprawled out dead on the floor.

i've lost two cats in the last 5 years, very differently.

I had Butch for about 14 years when my family moved about a mile in town. he was always an outdoor cat. A couple weeks after we moved, butch disappeared. we looked forever, but never found him. We got a little kitty that i called beast that got run over within about 2-3 months.

1 year later, one of our old neighbors calls us and tells us "i think butch is in your old yard". Butch had wandered all the way back and had been living off of catching mice and such in the old neighborhood. We took him to the vet, got him cleaned after a year of living in the open, were very careful to let him go outside in small cautious steps, and he got used to the new house this time.

When he was about 18, the family moved again (i was in college at this point), to a different city. Butch was really arthritic and old by this point, and after a couple months at the new house he wandered off, probably to die. He's been gone for about 2 years now, so we probably won't be seeing him again liek the other time.
