Re: Lifestyle question
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] It seems like I like to have an awake/sleep interval of more than 24 hours, so its like the time I get up keep moving forward a few hours every day. Generally though I would sleep from 3am-12pm I think. [/ QUOTE ] This seems to be pretty common for people spending many hours on a PC/internet. [/ QUOTE ] Really? I would find that interesting because I would have guessed it was the poker playing and not being on the computer in general that did this to me. Does anyone know of any reading material on this subject? [/ QUOTE ] I suffer from the same problem and did before I started playing poker too. I workout during the day and am generally quite "busy" so I don't know what could be causing it, but my "days" are naturally like 26 hours long. |

Re: Lifestyle question
I've been playing for a living since 2003, and i also agree that it helps a lot to try and get on some kind of schedule, and try to base it around when the games are good. For instance i usually wake up around noon and go to sleep around 4am, getting 8 hours of sleep and trying to "work" 8-10 hours a day, usually from about 5p-1a on weekdays and noon-8p or so on saturday/sunday.
Also, it's very, very important to try to take 1 or 2 days off a week regardless of how you're running, it sounds weird, but this can be one of the hardest things to do sometimes, and at least in my experience, it definitely has a negative effect when i don't do it. |

Re: Lifestyle question
I suspect it has something to do with not seeing the sun enough.
P.S: Interesting thread, but i can't really give any advice about it, my schedule is horrible. |

Re: Lifestyle question
Well, i've obviously got some experience on the subject.
My daily routine is: wake up whenever my body decides to, usually between noon and 2 pm. I try to make it earlier, but its pretty well correlated to when i go to bed, and I sleep for more hours than most people. for a few hours, I screw around on the internet and maybe eat some cereal. I should start doing something productive earlier probably, but its hard for some reason. Sometimes I have a coaching session scheduled for between noon and 2, so usually when thats the case i'm up and going pretty quickly, but not otherwise. After that, I either get lunch or start playing, and I'll play until 6 or 7 when my roommates are home, then usually get dinner and hang out with them. Several days a week i'll go climbing, and i'll usually play some ultimate as well, but thats mostly on weekends (both of these are more physically intense than they probably sound). anyhow, they usually go to bed around midnight, so i'll play another session starting whenever theyre done hanging out until i'm ready to go to bed, usually between 2 and 3 am. I dont play much on the weekends, unless I have some free time and there isnt anything else going on. I probably should though, as the games tend to be better then. If I play live, i'll wake up earlier than usual, ride to the subway and take it down to the casino, then play all day and come back before the subway closes at midnight. I can only do that once or maybe twice a week though, for various reasons. So, yea, I could exercise more and eat better, but I think I do a pretty decent job of both. I dont ever eat fast food, but living in san francisco I don't have to. I'm still in good shape and not at all fat (though I have a high metabolism partially to thank for that). When I play, i'm almost always on my A game, which is absolutely necessary. And I also do a really good job of separating my work from my social life. Even on days where I lose a ton of money, I dont become a recluse or a mopey loser, and I can't recall ever having a day when poker kept me from sleeping quite well. If I have a big winning day/week, I'm happy about it, but not overly so. Its just another week at the office. I also dont spend money extravagantly, which is something that probably separates me from many poker pros. I've never really been that kind of a guy though. Right now I dont even own a car, I ride a bike to get around (its a sweet bike though!). If you met me on the streets, ballin poker pro would be about the last thing you'd think I was (semi-dirty but functional hippie would probably be high on the list). |

Re: Lifestyle question
I'm not really a MSNL guy, but I do grind out a living at the 200NL tables. My perspective may be slightly different from others here, because I'm working towards going travelling again.
I have a late schedule like most people here. I usually sleep from 5am to 12pm. I sorta naturally fall into that rhythm. I tried going to a 'normal' schedule a few times, but I've accepted that it just doesn't work very well for me, for a number of reasons. First of all, the games are pretty bad in the European mornings. The fish are working or sleeping, not playing. Second, I don't really have anything to do at that time. Most of my friends have a job or they have to go to class. Once I've properly showered and had breakfast etc., I usually play a short afternoon session from 2-4pm or so. My roommates tend to start trickling in around that time, so I wrap it up, hang out with them, cook, play some soccer outside, watch a movie, etc. until it's 11-12PM or so. After that I play another 2 hour night session, though I skip it a little bit too often if I've been out drinking. So basically I'm pretty lazy, and I mostly play poker when I feel like it, but this is what my schedule usually ends up looking like. |

Re: Lifestyle question
I haven't played in a few weeks due to doing other things but here is a typical day.
Wake up at 9:15, get ready, shower eat breakfast go to class at 10 Class until about 4 usually with an hour break for lunch come back, chill/work out until about 5 or 5:30. shower, eat dinner. Now I usually get some work done or just hang out with my friends doing whatever until 9. Play poker 9-11 or 12, go to sleep. I basically stopped playing poker since from that 9-12 time lately I've been hanging out with a couple girls and I don't regret missing poker a bit. I just try and get a couple hours in whenever I can and I am enjoying my current lifestyle much more then when i played more poker and made more money. |

Re: Lifestyle question
on a weekday, it would be
10am wake up, play till noon 12-1, get some lunch/chill 1-2, read investing books 2-3 class 3-5 breakdance 5-6 workout 6-8 study 8-10 poker (if i feel like it - this is very important to me. if i don't feel like playing, i don't play. i just never seem to play optimally if i don't want to play.) if i'm not gonna play poker, i just prolly go break again, or chill with friends. 10-12 chillllll 12-10am sleep (yea i know i sleep a lot) I try not to play more than 2 hours on the weekends, as there's always somethin going down, parties, visiting friends, going out, etc etc my 2c. in retrospect, my showering cuts into my study time. aha woops. |

Re: Lifestyle question
I work at an engineering firm 40 hours a week. I have flex hours so I can come to work whenever pretty much. Sometimes I get in at 8am other times at 11am. I have to work 40 hours a week though.
I play poker maybe 2 out of 5 weekdays. I train in Thai Boxing and Jujitsu on the other days. Usually when I'm training TB/BJJ I don't have any energy to play poker afterwards. On the weekends I always play in the Stars Supernova Freeroll and usually have other tables up until that tournament ends. On Sunday sometimes I play in the Warmup or the Mil but not as often on the Supernova FR. Of course I play more when running well versus sucking. |

Re: Lifestyle question
I need to get my life into gear in terms of working out and what/not. But, with that said.
I have no schedule. I do what I want when I want. That means that I have days where I play 8-9 hours of poker and days I play 0. I have gotten the swings so they don't affect my life as much, but it's still a small issue in extreme cases. Actually, I actually just got off of having probably the worst two days buy-in wise of my life. I think I'm playing well and just running shittily. Ph1ledingue did me proper. I was pissed, but as I've posted, my girlfriend plays as well and is understanding to the less-than-optimal mood I'm in. She's kind of a big deal. I'm taking a few days off. (and moving. [censored]!) I constantly "wake up early" to meet working friends for lunch around 11:30 or 12. I'm a zombie at that point. I have a ton of "me" time and I don't think I would want it any other way. I never let poker come in the way of doing something else for the most part. Ive been playing for a long time but more seriously for about 11 months now, and I just got bored for the first time a few days ago when I didn't feel like playing after getting demolished. Life is good, but I do think that I'm missing out on the social aspects of having a real job. With that said, I'm very happy with my hobbies, friends and my girlfriend. If I didn't have all of those, then things might be a little different. I have this feeling that for some people those key things aren't there. People envy me for my schedule and monies made, but I still feel kinda underutilized and am in a desperate hunt to get better and move up. If poker were to end tomorrow I would go into a state of depression for not utilizing my talents to the utmost and reaping more monies. I am not unhealthy by any means. I eat (fairly) well and I work out on occasion. I stayed in school and graduated with a fairly decent GPA in a good program, so I figure that if/when poker ends I shouldn't have that hard of a time finding a position. Getting back to your quesitons: I volcano vaporize 4-5 days a week as well. And I drink with friends 1-2 days a week. I don't let poker get in the way of friends, etc, and I cannot play for more than 3-4 hours at a time w/o a break. 30min-1hr and I'm fresh if I was winning in the session before. |
