I stopped at one the other day that was the first I've been to in months that had the auto thing missing. I said out loud that I wondered how much business this [censored] place loses because they don't have the little watchamacallits. Some old guy overheard and said he was wondering the same thing.

some of you must not drive or you are just dumber than [censored] to not know, even just empirically, that EVEN when you're holding the handle it will stop pumping when the tank is full.

Incidentally the way it stops pumping is there is a smaller tube at the end of the nozzle that sucks air and when the level of gas gets high enough it ends up sucking gas at a much higher pressure thereby shutting off the nozzle.

[/ QUOTE ]

I think it is safe to say that most of us also know, empirically, that the shut off is not foolproof, and that if the nozzle is not fully inserted in the stem, or if the system otherwise does not fuction, then it could come loose and gas could leak all over the place.

If this was only to happen 1 time in 10,000, it still would be a massive safety, enviromental, and liability concern for the gas station and its insurance company.

You have to ask yourself this.... if you were a gas station owner(not a customer) would you want your nozzles attended or unattended for the hundreds of customers you get each day. I think the answer is pretty clear.

[/ QUOTE ]

I can see it happening if you aren't holding it. I was talking about when you are holding the handle/trigger yourself because the auto-hold feature is gone.

As for the other part I disagree. I can speak only for myself but if I knew Gas Station X didn't have the auto feature and Gas Station Y did, I would never go to X. For similar reasons, I never go to ARCO AM/PM because they charge you to use a debit card and you can't pay at the pump (you have to pay at this rediculous automated vestibule thing).

Also note that none of the gas stations around here (seattle area) have a disabled auto latch.

Ugh, AM/PM is so goddamned annoying with this. The problem is, their gas is usually ~10 cents or more cheaper than competing stations so it's tempting if you're filling up a 20 gallon tank or whatever, but they ghetto up the whole process by either charging you to pay debit or forcing you to go inside if you're going to pay credit. I'm sure it's a deliberate ploy to rack up debit charges but it's annoying and they can [censored] off.

I thought this was common knowledge?

Also, I cannot remember the last time I went to a pump that didn't have the auto hold feature.

The best part about this thread is OP trying to be helpful, about 1/3 of the thread saying "whoa, sweet idea, thanks", and the other 2/3 saying "WTF are you retarded this has been around for ever, everyone knows about it". Well apparently 1/3 of the thread didn't.
